Tatanka Breeders Club: Meat Quail project with history, discussion, pictures and videos

I really suspect that's the reason the thread died out here

Just disappointing.
Free eggs is ok, but its pretty awesome to see people pay it forward so many times!
I am grateful to have the information especially the egg weight, and bird size, pretty exciting project
My end purpose is feeding our family, am not worried about profit from a few birds.
Anyone that knows poultry knows it its hard to profit from it unless you have the capital to invest.
I'll be happy to just learn more about breeding success and failures, the biggest bird and eggs

I'm happy to see interest in here, likely the more giving sort have moved on to new projects and the followers have too. So, since there is more interest and new people, we can be the Gen2 to help continue the process.

I guess i'm saying it is only dead if WE let it be dead.

It's not up to those others whomever it may be, but us to continue the program. If there is interest and active participants I'm sure if there are questions we can shake up some of the originals to help guide us to finding the answers.

Right now, unless your raising um inside w/ a little heat and light is just about the wrong time of year. Once i do some harvesting My winter project is to raise a gen-1 Jumbos to get a decent breeding stock and then hope to add the Tatankas to my program this spring if I can kiss enough tail-feathers to get some.

Forums and projects come and go, and new interest rises and falls so if come spring or when the quail start laying, if there is still enough interest I welcome everyone to join me working on continuing this line.

:)

i would have loved to share tatanka eggs had mine not come to a horrific ending.. I was promised more eggs but never got any

.. if I had, y'all would have had PMs from me by now asking for your addresses so I could send some your way...

my current quail are still fairly small and haven't laid yet.. I plan to cull as heavily as I can .. keeping the biggest and starting my line over..and IF I happen to end up with some jumbos or more of the tatankas; working with them to improve whichever line can benefit from the additions..

once I have something worthy of sharing (at least jumbo sized birds) then I'll be sure to let the thread know

Hi Rick,

So sorry that i didn't reply sooner but I haven't been here for some time. Unfortunately I have decided that dealing with these small quail was just not worth my while. I slaughtered all of them. I am now working on building a Poultry Quarantine Station so that I can import hatching eggs from James Marie farms. This is an expensive project and will take some time to complete. You can email me at [email protected].

Been weighing and following your program now threw my third generations I hatched from eggs from Elias Watson -each time keeping only birds that are close the standards you set . I killed all birds other than two pairs . I later moved them on grass to help them threw the molt and I lost 2 that found their way out . I have just two females now the rest in the freezer . I tried writing to Elias about it as I wanted to work with him on the breeding . I have bred a family of fowl I created that are still winning today after 18 generations in and no new blood . I have the pens to single mate . I think these are two females left should I start from eggs again or cross back to Elias the blood however is yours I believe . I am in NJ .

I have a question on these special quail under your suggested breeding Mobyquail - what if things did get bad and there was not feed in the stores how can we still produce good quail for meat purposes . I just bought a hand feed grinder and would like to try making homemade feed for these can you suggest ideas on this or any other breeders please .

Wait, the project is over?? Well shucks. I guess I'll have to do it on my own once I get my place established. It is too bad, looked like a fun breeding program and I love genetics!
