Tatanka Breeders Club: Meat Quail project with history, discussion, pictures and videos

this is an interesting topic. I started raising quail to feed my falcons and just for kicks would pick the hens that laid the largest eggs, next generation the same culling the old ones etc. this last batch I just hatched, some of the eggs didn't even fit into the quail trays. Are these the Coturnix quail your calling "Tatanka"? I don't see Tatanka as a breed. One problem I have run into with selective breeding is getting hens that lay double yokes. Anyone else have that problem? Also the chicks seem slow (or slower than smaller chicks) getting out of the egg when hatching. I just started selecting eggs that fit the quail trays with no extra room to spare. These should start hatching this coming Monday.

I don't know much about genetics but wouldn't using such closely related animals to breed cause deformities in the offspring? I have been considering doing something similar to this but wasn't sure about inbreeding.

Fowl genetics have very very little in common with mammal genetics. I experiment with color in my coturnix quail and have found no combination of inbreeding (obviously I stay within reason) that causes deformities or loss of important characteristics.
