Tatanka Breeders Club: Meat Quail project with history, discussion, pictures and videos

Just thought of something, looks like that is a double, like 2 eggs that became one. Crack it open I bet you have a double yoke. The profile view looks like it comes in then out. Let us know

Try this. First time using the iPad for a picture. These are my newest eggs from breeders that just matured. The eggs are a little smaller, I am hoping this stops them from falling as the trays are tilted during incubation.

WOW I just realised you Guys are the ones Robby told me to read up on and learn about because you know your stuff . I am new learning and trying to get my little flock up and enjoying it .
But thank you for letting me bragg i never seen one that Big before .

When I first toyed with the idea of raising quail for my falcons I also was looking at the eggs for a food source. I lived in SE Asia for 4 years and both quail and the eggs were used for human consumption. My first pen of hens producing eggs for us to eat, the eggs were normal size, dropped into the egg trays with plenty of extra room. Made a batch of deviled eggs. My granddaughter had her first deviled egg during Thanksgiving last year. See she is allergic to eggs but can eat these quail eggs with no problem. Had to pickle some, then made a few dishes with them like the birds nest (hash browns with poached egg on top), bacon baskets, etc. I just love them but working with the tiny egg was getting to me, so the selective breeding started. Now with the larger quail egg I'm really having fun. Try eggs Benedict with a few. One problem I do see with the larger egg is hatching them. Not uncommon to hatch a day late and they seem "sluggish" compared to the smaller normal sized chick. I just had one hatch last night it has to have 2" legs on it. I'm calling it "stilts" because it stands so much higher than the other chicks that hatched out.

Been reading this thread very interesting and Lots of Good Info Thanks

Now where can i get 30 % feed since my town only has chicken Pheasant junk
I've found that mom & pop feed stores are usually happy to special order the higher protein game bird feeds to get my business. I just have to make sure to let them know the week before I want the feed so they can get it into their next shipment.

I wouldn't call the bigger eggs sluggish. Bigger eggs just take longer to hatch. If you set small bantam eggs and jumbo RIR eggs in the same incubator won't the smaller eggs always hatch first? They all start with just one fertilized cell. It takes more time for cellular division to make a bigger chick, so the eggs just take longer to develop. Just like it takes longer to make an elephant baby as opposed to a human (bad analogy I know but it's what I could come up with on short notice). If you are aiming for larger quail you need to start with setting the largest eggs to hatch and just work with your incubator to devise a way for the eggs to work in the egg trays. Or maybe you don't mind the smaller size quail for feeding your falcons? I don't know what they would prefer. Maybe the larger quail have too much meat to waste when feeding falcons?

Im not sure what one but i just got a huge egg size of a golf ball and inside it was another huge egg Single Yolk. I think i may have to cull that hen before she prolapses

i dont ant anything to suffer she is just a meat bird not a tatanka
