Tax Assessment?

The assessor just randomly showed up here today. We bought the house in March, unfortunately for $92k more than it cost when it was built (the last assessment in 1999). Needless to say, our taxes are going up. Anyhow he asked about "other" outbuildings, while looking at the coop & goat shed (the coop is new, the shed, visually obviously not). Anyhow, the phone rang, so I was able to skirt that question.

He didn't say ANYTHING about the coop. But, did take pics of the deck,which is OLD, but not on the paperwork aparently.

Have any of your coops been assessed to your property?

Luckily, the assessment on my 5 acres went down from the purchase price from 10 years ago, so our taxes are less. Just changed insurance, and our insurance guy assessed that it would cost 5x the original (1999) purchase price to rebuild everything. Go figure!! I understand that Dave Ramsey is fuming at the new laws which enable hiring of an assessor TOTALLY unfamiliar with your area and your area's housing prices.
BTW, IF you're going to build quarters for your animals, build them on stilts or cement pads so that they are NOT permanent structures but movable ones. Then, you won't be taxed and on any extra buildings.

Thanks for that tidbit!! Our coop is movable, it's on pier blocks (whatever those cement blocks w/ the wooden center are called).

I will look up California law, if it comes back that they have added the "outbuilding".
