Aside from taxes, your car insurance rates are based in part on the number of miles you drive -- as they should be. Your car sitting in your driveway has very little "exposure" to get in a crash. Driving down the road a lot increases the chances you will be in (or cause) a crash.
The federal gas tax was last raised in 1997. What other bill do you have that hasn't increased since 1997? I support increasing the federal gas tax proportional to inflation. I would like to see a way for the gas tax to be increased when the cost of gasoline drops -- for example, we were at $4.00 per gallon in the early fall. It would have been horrible to increase taxes at that point. But, when the cost dropped to $1.65, it would have been no sweat off my back at that point to have a 5c gas tax worked in. The price would still have been a relief. Then, as gasoline gradually climbs back up, the 5c would be built into the new prices, and therefore part of the supply-demand equation.
I would like to see more federal gas tax funds going to road REPAIRS and public transportation instead of new roads or widening. In rural areas, especially, road repairs are the challenge.
