Teacher cheating

My fever at the moment is probably causing me to miss things, but when I had hatches set up for teachers, I would have chicks ready to go the day after they were supposed to hatch in school, just in case the school hatch did not work. When nothing hatched at school, the teachers told the kids that sometimes things don't work as planned, and I bring the chicks for show and tell the following day so they can at least see a baby chick.

I'm a teacher. A good teacher. There are good ones in every school just like there are bad ones. Same as most any other profession.

Wow, this is really pretty ridiculous, if the teacher did this as you said, which I have no reason to question. Even if the chicks failed to hatch successfully, that would still be a lesson about the process. What a shame that she turned it into more of a magic trick than a lesson on the reality of the process. Shame on her.

That having been said, this of course does not reflect on teachers in general, many of which are wonderful role models. I certainly hope this doesn't turn into a teacher hating thread. But what this particular teacher did was pretty stupid, I have to say.

Since you were not in the classroom, nor was the teaching assistant, you are just repeating rumor and supposition.

Maybe the teacher said "this is what the chicks will look like when they hatch", or maybe it was still three eggs and one chick. You don't know, unless you were there.

I have to agree with this.

Maybe the teacher the OP was talking about should have researched more about incubation and hatching before she jumped into it.

I went to TSC this weekend and bought 2 new ducks. As I was checking out the cashier told me they just sold a bunch of ducks. I asked why someone would want a large amount of ducks his reply "A teacher bought them for her class. Someone accidentally unplugged the incubator and since we dont have chicks they are now hatching ducks" I would understand if something like that happened but really just putting store eggs in then bringing a chick in the next day? Thats cheating in a bad bad way

Does this mean that when I slipped the SLW chick in the brooder with the BO and silkies I hatched, that I was cheating? Or was I taking advantage of an opportunity?

I do think it sounds like there was a lot of jumping onto the bandwagon without enough hard facts.

Every year for the past 5, a nearby preschool hatches eggs for me. This year they have 5 incubators going, and have added in the kindergarten class as well. They do a LOT of learning about what is happening inside the egg, and they candle the eggs.

I honestly do not see a problem with replacing an egg that does not hatch with a real chick of (hopefully) a similar age. Now replacing the egg with a chick after 3 days makes no sense. Why would the teacher have bothered acquiring an incubator and fertile eggs if that was the plan? I do know of schools that have had chicks hatch at different intervals (multiple incubators), so that is a possibility. And it is also possible that the school's schedule is such that they will not have any time to raise the chicks after they hatch, so doubling up and raising chicks while other eggs are incubating seems like one way to give the kids the full experience in a shortened timeframe.

Yes, the teacher could have been an idiot--but too often we jump onto the band wagon without knowing the whole story.

Seems like she did a kind of "time lapse" like you see on cooking show. Mix the ingredients... baked apple pie...20 seconds later. It really helps those of us with short attention spans.

Also she may not want to see 0 chicks hatch and the kids be sad and parents complain about the trauma of it all, yadda yadda yadda.

Just be glad they saw "chicks come from eggs." Most people think eggs (and chickens to eat) come from store.

No not all teachers are bad. I am not sure about the one the OP was talking about. I do know that my children had some really great teachers and the government made teaching harder on them by adding all those stupid state and federal test they spent over 9 weeks studying for those test. To Write of words, you are a great person, and I am sure a great teacher and the students you have are very lucky. I am sure you have touched more then one young person. For that be proud. To the ones who have given up at being great teachers maybe it is time to change jobs. I think the teacher copied an idea and had no way of knowing the correct way of doing the egg hatching thing so took shortcuts. I feel sorry for the students who missed out on the knowledge and learning from the process. Now the other teachers students who are waiting and going through the whole process are not sure what is going on.

Thank you
