Teacher seeking info in Kansas: Please Help!

Hi neighbor, I'm just across the MO/KS border and north a bit.

You have some wonderful resources right there in Lawrence. One was noted above, another I know of is Revolution Mama. She has excellent birds, some rather rare. Look for her here or on facebook - her farm is called Revolution Ranch.

Check craigslist also, I see listing in and around Lawrence often.

If you are going to be hatching at school you have to be very diligent about watching the temps. I have helped by donating eggs and an incubator at schools and sometimes they dont hatch because at night they turn the heat down and that can affect your bator temps. Make sure you dont put the incubator near a window cause that will affect your temps. Maybe if you can get this to work building the coop with the kids can be part of the project. Talk to local building suppliy companies for donations of materials. Also remember the chickens need to be taken care of everyday and when summer break comes someone still needs to be there to take care of them. It is a hugh project you are wanting to do but it can be done and I think its great. As for eggs I agree ask on here or check craigslist. I'm sure if you post on Craigslist what you are doing you will get people that will donate the eggs to you. The kids will love it too.

from Washington State glad you joined us!
Sounds like a great project, wish I have had a teacher like you!
I'm sure there are a lot of local people around you that have Orpington
eggs, you could also put a ad on craiglist for eggs!

Thanks everyone for the info and the warm welcomes! I really am glad to find this place as this is going to be a big project. I have people lined up to take the chickens after they hatch and in the long term I'd like to help the school start its own garden/chicken coop. I think building the coop with the kids would be a really cool project. They're already naming the chicks and volunteering for various tasks and we haven't even got the eggs yet. I did manage to get an incubator and some eggs from a parent who was willing to donate them for this project. I'm very excited to begin. Please keep offering suggestions it's very helpful and appreciated!

from Upstate NY!!!!

If you like the idea of raising Orpingtons, you would also like Australorps and Dominiques. I'm getting 2 Australorp chicks in March and it sounds like they're a lot like Orpingtons but they come mostly in black. I recommend Dominiques because they are incredibly friendly and docile, although they do not have that "fluffy yellow chick" look. I think that's good though because most of the sixth graders I know think that all chicks are yellow and all chickens are white.

I am not saying that you should get these breeds instead of Orpingtons, just that you would like them.
