I worked in a school cafeteria for 16 years, and i was honestly againest the teachers wearing blue jeans on Friday. An ag teacher just laughed and laughed when we told him that if he wore a tie to class the kids would set up and take notice and "treat" him differently. He tried it, and didn't laugh anymore. When you dress the part, make them call you by your formal name, it changes things. You cannot be a teacher and a friend, just like you can't be a parent and a friend. That is what their friends are for!!!

With anything in life, you take the good with the bad. Some teachers are good, some are bad. This guys sounds like he has absolutely no business teaching kids. I don't buy the whole thing that he should be excused because lots of kids like him either. What about the kids who's self-esteem he destroys? I guarantee if this child feels this way, there are probably ten others that feel exactly the same way and don't speak up (probably more, but if he is a popular teacher, they are not going to speak out, especially if they are afraid of him). Honestly, this doesn't sound like he was joking either at least not with this student. He did, in fact, take 20% of her grade away, right?

I am a student. 90% of my teachers I would classify as very good to excellent. 5% I would say are truly exceptional, amazing teachers, the best of the best. The other 5% are miserable ego-maniacs on a power trip that should be forced into the unemployment line. Again, just my opinion. I always seem to like the teachers/professors the most that are engaging, interesting, require challenging work, are fair, and use multiple different formats to teach. Really, I absolutely adore most of them and have made some life-long friends in some of them. There are a very small percentage though that can be downright sadistic, almost as if they entered the profession just to be in control and exert dominance over a subordinate. It has been studied many times over and confirmed that when people are in a position of power, a small percentage of them will abuse that power and become sadistic. It is a fact. It sounds like this teacher may be having this problem.

No child is required to be thick-skinned or to have the twisted sense of humor desired by his/her teacher. I can be plenty sarcastic and often say exactly the opposite of what I mean to be funny/silly, but I would never expect a child to have the same sense of humor that I do, much less to be the brunt of my jokes!

Even if they were saying it as a joke, knowing that you are the hardest working person there? That is all I am saying.

I tease people all the time- my supervisor works non-stop- I say things like, oh you are such a slacker. She knows that I actually mean the opposite.

Apparently that is what this teacher was doing.

People no longer have the ability to put things into context. It's all simplistic and black and white. Someone makes a joke and suddenly he is a bad guy.

There are circumstances where joking is appropriate and circumstances when it is not. Derogaratory humor is NEVER appropriate in a classroom, and it is rarely if ever appropriate in the workplace. Your desire to be entertained does not supercede the child's right to not be denigrated.

Next time he looses it and gets violent or threatens a student, call the cops.

You can STILL call the police about this incident. Even if the school's "statute of limitations" ends with the school day (which I actually doubt), the legal system's does not. Also, FWIW, one of my son's 7th grade teachers was on her last year before retirement. Her comment to a student got her fired and lost her her retirement. And it was a LOT less damaging a comment than has been discussed on this thread.

Document his every word and abusive action in a journal and be sure to put dates. I'd also use the record memo feature on my cell if I could and record his interactions with you. How long will your cell record? Can you download it onto your computer?

I may just do that =] I can record up to 10 minutes at a time for 60 minutes, the only problem is when it starts to record its a pretty loud beep

I have tried putting my phone on silent and turning the volume down but no matter what it beeps. I could cough to cover the beep though

Check the sound settings on your phone--it's different than the volume for hearing a call.
