TeaChick's Chicks

Oh, cool! Yes, eggs are good. ;)
Do they taste different than chicken eggs?
What breed(s) do you recommend?
What do I need to know?
Is it better to get chicks or ones that are already laying?
About how long do they live?
Yeah ;)

They are a little differnt.

I have a Mallard and she would lay eggs a lot.

Not to much more then chickens i guess.

I don't really know.

I have a 5 year old duck know I think they live around there and 6 years old.

There are also lots of duck threads on here also about the different breeds and stuff.

A neighbor when I was a kid kept Mallards and Peking, I think the Mallard drakes are beautiful!!! I like the hens looks too, I'm not a fan of the plain white Peking though.
Thanks for the info.
I'll check out those threads. ;-)

Yeah I like the males too.

I like Pekins though they are fat and fluffy lol

Yeah your welcome. :)

Okay, first, a disclaimer. lol
None of my plans are every set in stone, they're just penciled on paper (so to speak).
With that said, I thought I would share my current plans, although they are subject to change.

I've got to find out what I'm looking for candling eggs to see if they're fertilized or not.
I'm going to make a candling box out of a shoebox and my DDs' bedroom lamp.
Then I'll candle the eggs I've been collecting to see how many of them are fertilized.

The first order of business is to adjust my original coop for the puppies. The we've got to find homes for all the puppies. Then I'll be able to use my coop for the new chicks (after a good cleaning).

A friend offered me use of an incubator, so I'll use that one.
I'm going to help my DS build the incubator in earlier posts. Then he can hatch some of my eggs as his laying flock.

This will increase my laying flock sooner than waiting for my hens to go broody in the spring.

Hopefully, my DH and I can pull off meeting a breeder from the Heritage Large Fowl thread and I can get some young Jersey Giants.
Then I'll build a double breeding pen. One side will be for DS's flock and the other side will be for me to breed chickens.
I'll put the JGs and some Leghorn hens in there. Because the Leghorns lay white eggs, I'll know which ones are JG eggs; then I can collect the white eggs and let my JG brood hen sit on the JG eggs, when she goes broody.
This will all be over the course of next year, no particular time frame.

Otherwise, I'm still looking for a Bantam Cochin roo, but I'll have to wait and see what happens there. One possibility is that I could try to get one at Tractor Supply, where I ended up with Snoodle from.

Maybe, I'll be able to increase my laying flock this winter such that I can start selling eggs.
I might be able to sell chickens too???
