Technical coop building question.

When I was building my coop, I found these instructions for making an external nest box. Being a complete novice, I found the details and photos very user friendly.

It was not too difficult to adapt them to my coop, even though I was not building the Garden Coop. You could probably even put in the adaptions that Bruceha mentioned, for having the door be smaller with a six inch wall below it to keep the bedding in, instead of the removable blocks behind the full door that are suggested.

I made mine with the blocks. They have their pros and cons. At clean out time, it's nice to brush all the old pine shavings right out the door. But it was tricky measuring the blocks just right. Sometimes they slide in place nicely and other times they are a tight wedge or somewhat loose.

I also used a piano hinge on mine instead of two separate hinges. I've actually grown quite fond of piano hinges. They work well in a lot of scenarios.

Anyway, I hope the link is helpful for your learning process.

What kind of dogs do you show?

English Setters. Yes, bird dogs. Should be interesting with the chickens right?

You have SHOW English Setters, not the field kind? Wow. How awesome. About a year ago I was searching everywhere I could find for an English Setter puppy. All I could find was field type. I eventually decided to get a rough collie instead. She turned out to be a great choice. How did your dog show go?

Awesome! Very good info. I've taken it all in and will consider all of this while I'm building. Thank you for taking the time to explain in detail the "how to's" of this process. All three of you did an awesome job making it clear to me. I under stand it hard to explain something like this in paper but I actually understood everything you all explained.
The only thing I'm confused about is what are meant by the size of my roof being bigger because my roof is flat? I'm planning a flat roof that is 10x16 because my coop and run at 8x14. So I'm confused about this.
So also I'm using rafters not trusses, got it and when I said butted I meant sistered. Maybe if I used the correct terminology that would help you all out :).
For sheathing on the roof I was planning on using 8'x4'x1/2" plywood with most likely a metal roofing panels. I would set the rafters 12" apart and either use birdsmouth or the hangers. Also I could do the ladder thing on the side overhang for more strength and stability. Also when I get to the roof I will revisit and maybe consider changing it up to 2x6 rafters. I got the base framed out in my garage last night and it's bigger than I thought. So we'll see.

On another note my site is a nightmare. We (me, DH and son) dug for 3 1/2 hours today hoping to get the gravel/cement block footing in. We only got one in and leveled before my boys threw in the towel to prepare for tonight's football games. A little disappointed we didn't get more done but it's a start

Rocks as. If as icebergs and trees stumps and roots. The rocks were everywhere. We had to change our plan dozens of time and just kept hitting this immovable rocks and roots.

Here's is my 2x6 PT base frame. It is huge. I'm probably building way bigger than I need but everyone on hear said build bigger was better so here goes!
