Technical coop building question.

@ScottandSam I've thought about it.....thats why I have my pop door and nest boxes 9" off the floor but not sure I want to do it in the coop itself. Im definitely going to try it in the run. I have this irrational fear of creepy crawlies and don't know if I can deal with a bug infestation inside my coop.

Perfect. think about no poop catchers you run could benefit from the poop. so from under roost floor to run cleanout access. We tend to haul out the bigger stuff to outside @ every few weeks. in the mean time we cover it up with mainly hay before it goes into a compost pile. We will be deep little in coop and deep litter bed in run. If that the right useage of terms . Basically deep little clean out in coop composting bed will be the run.

My poop board is 20" wide and is 18" from the floor. the roost is 10" from the wall. My three pullets have no problem walking underneath the board as they have to go under it to get to the nest boxes. They have not started laying yet but they do go into the nest boxes just to check them out. My coop is only 4X4 and they seem quite comfortable in it. All of the dark things on the floor are feathers and not poop. I love the poop board. Very easy to clean and only takes a couple of minutes a day to maintain

I have thought of doing that. I put a large door from my coop directly into my run. So I could just pull all the dirty coop litter directly into the run and I may just do that eventually but to start I think I want to try the poop boards. Still trying to figure out how to make that happen. Thanks for your help

@Pats Poultry Thank you. Do you have large fowl? or bantams? Just wondering because I ordered 16 but only keeping 8 but they are the big girls. A mixture of Orpingtons, cochins, brahma etc. Do you think they could easily walk under 18" poop boards? Also do you find that they poop on your walls alot having the roost 10" away? That would help my space issue alot too. Also having the poop boards 20" wide does most of the poop land in the poop tray? As long as the majority of the poop lands in the tray and most of it doesnt end up on the walls Id be very happy I really want to get this done today becuase I can work inside the coop where its a little warmer since its as cold as the artic here today,.

I have 2 Easter Eggers and a Cochin mix. Please keep in mind the these girls are only 5 months old but I do not see them getting much if any bigger, maybe a little wider but not much taller. I have not had any poop on the back wall ever and they all have their butts facing the wall. I have been told that a 20" board was too big in my small coop due to the fact that they would need more room to get down. They all just hop down to the floor and out they go. No flapping involved. As far as them walking underneath the board,They are always going into the nest boxes that are underneath the board with no problem. Granted, They do not spend a lot of time in the coop but when they do they seem pretty comfortable. I am sure this is not the norm but it works for me. I have attached a pic of them on the roost as I am cleaning out the board. I want to say that they come in to say hi but I think they are just nosie.

Oh I forgot to mention that I issue idle threats if the do poop on the wall. "if you do poop on the wall, colonel Sanders will be coming for lunch" or if you poop on the wall I will get the ax sharpened, or have you ever heard of chicken cacciatore" It seems to be working

This is a great example of a slightly smaller layout...cleanable walls probably help, as does the low roost and board itself(for hopping down).
How far from the bottom of board to top of roost?
Do you remove roost to sift poops out?

The roost is only 6" from the bottom of the poop board. They will step down on to the edge of the board and then hop down. One side of the coop is all door so I open it and just lean in to clean the board. So far so good

Hi All, so after about a 3 week delay for blizzards, 16 delivered dead chick trauma, high winds, rain and freezing temps the weather finally helped us out today and we had 8 yards of loam delivered so we can put those finishing touches on the coop. I will be working on it again tomorrow and post some updated pictures. Its supposed to snow on Friday and rain for many, many days after that so its slow going.
