Tell me if I'm crazy for wanting goats in Los Angeles. PLEASE

IamRainey:I think I AM, bajabirdbrain. But I've crossed my first hurdle. I heard from my city council person that I am zoned to have a couple goats if they're pets and not used commercially.

That is ok, most of us have a screw loose or we wouldn't do what we do for these darn chickens! At least you will have something to help mow your lawn. Have fun!!!

ut-oh... just to clarify... goats browse rather than graze. So you'll need to protect every tree/shrub/decorative plant that you don't want eaten or destroyed. They prefer to eat leaves, bark, twigs, woody plants, vines, shrubbery, etc. If it's lawn care you'd like, get sheep. (and even some of them like to browse).

You're crazy. There are so many better pets than goats. Goats smell bad, are demanding and will destroy your yard. Yes, they'll be noisy too. I do agree they're adorable...in someone else's pasture or at a petting zoo. I live in the country and don't even want goats.

Sorry, but you asked if anyone thinks you're crazy. ;) If you still want goats and just want to be encouraged that's okay too!

Ohhhh come on now Ms Biddy... goats do NOT smell bad if they are kept properly. And I can say from personal experience that chickens create a LOT more noxious odors and mess than goats do. Chickens are also much noisier (except perhaps for Nubian goats, which seem to be the noisiest of the breeds). Goats don't even compare to the neighbor's dogs who bark constantly (goats don't). They are no more demanding than any other pet that you allow to behave that way.

I didn't realize that living in the country meant one had to have goats, although I do both. Just because you don't want them doesn't mean nobody wants them. Goats are awesome, and great pets. Mine provide me with milk, meat (down the road a bit), companionship, entertainment, and are a joy to be around. But that's just me. :D

@Latestarter based on the thread title, "Tell me if I'm crazy for wanting goats in Los Angeles. PLEASE" I assumed that my opinions would be acceptable to share. Sometimes people want to be reminded of the drawbacks when making a decision and obviously I'm not a fan of goats. You obviously are. Like I said, they're cute.

If you don't want to milk them, I suggest you look into getting wethers (castrated males). They are often cheaper and are said to be extremely friendly.

The noisiness of a goat is somewhat breed dependent but also individual. I have three Nigerian Dwarf does. One is a talker and one almost never makes a peep. But when she is in heat she is loud. They are all grouchy when in heat, too. Pygmies are year round breeders, so if you get does you will have to deal with that every 18 to 21 days.

We all have different preferences. It's good to share different opinions.

I wasn't trying to deny you your opinion... just sharing mine. Sorry if it seemed like I was putting you down or anything... Kinda difficult some times when conversing with just the written word...
