Tell me why you keep Roosters...

I am keeping 2 roosters they are babies, but one is bantam ee/silky/Maran, the other is a grey that looks like a blue laced red wyanndotte. but he is actually a grey of some sort "maybe a blue americauna/buff cochin bantam." he has beard and ear muffs, feathered legs.

Well, my post disappeared from yesterday, that's weird. But I just wanted to add that we have eight roosters and about thirty hens. We've had as many as 10 roosters, and pretty much draw the line there, because beyond that, the older guys start getting stressed. But they all get along. They have a pecking order, and they will work together to protect the hens. They do not tear each other up, or fight even, to speak of. They split into groups of two or three roos per group of hens, and there's also a bachelor club of young cockerels. They will stand facing in different directions with the hens in the middle, it's neat to see. And a lot of the boys are friends, and they will lie down together in the sun, or roost together. They also do not seem to be too much for the girls to handle, although that's another reason we don't want to get carried away with too many roos. But they do not fight to the death, ever. We only had one l bantam cochin roo get torn up by another rooster, and that's because I think that rooster just hated the bantam. So the bantam went to live in a pen, and he got to go out under supervision. He turned out to be the best rooster ever for protecting the hens with small chicks (when he could) or keeping the recently "weaned" young cockerels and pullets company, when their mother had deserted them.

I just received my first flock of 6 gals (3 Ameraucana 2 BR and 1 Sil Wyandotte) and after reading this thread, think they need a man in the house. I don't really have plans for chicks, but by spring, who knows, may change my mind. Would there be a best choice breed to chose for my gals, or does it matter? Thx!

find a nice rooster. people are always trying to give away roosters so find one with a good temper, or one that is pretty. I would not advise a RIR for a first timer. I also keep a roo in a night box so they don't crow at odd hrs. roos are great though.
