Tell the truth - how clean is YOUR coop?

We also use to the DLM. I go in a rake and turn about once a week (or two) and add more shaving about once a month or so. We also sprinkle DE all over. About every 6 months we take it all out and start over.

ETA: Our coop stays dry and doesn't smell, so we figure we aren't doing bad.

This thread made me remember a fellow that I wish every one of you could meet.

He was a local character who raised Quail. Fairly large operation. If you have heard of him at all your either local of you saw him on one of the Very Early Johnny Carson Shows. He made Jewelry out of the more "select" droppings. He figured it appeared to be his biggest production so why not make some money off of it

Frank O Hill was his name.

He was ancient when I met him at a Poultry Diseases meeting down at Pontiac Lab near Columbia SC. Probably around the late 80's and I would guess was in his late 70's then. However he piloted his own small plane to the meeting all alone. And brought some examples of his Jewelry. That old man was a hoot and I wish he was still around. Kept you in stitches. He was always invited to the meetings as sort of an in house comedian.

I know that there is a best of Johnny Carson out there (Volume 1 I think) that his appearance is on. Might be a tape though. If you ever get a chance to view that thing it might be worth your while. He is sorely missed. I do not know when he passed but I would image he has by now.

Another idea of what do with those droppings if they are particularly nice ones!

Correction. It is called Carson's Classic Moments and it is Volume 1

Twice a year it gets cleaned from top to bottom and new everything added. Other than that it only gets scraped and cleaned as needed. I use the deep litter method.

Everybody is healthy and happy.

It is time for cleaning before winter so it is not too pretty right now. Just waiting for a few warm days!

I have CDO (the letters have to be alphabetical!!) so mine is way clean. I've organized everything so that the poo lands strategically. Clean under the roost, push old clean shavings from the sides under the roost, place new shavings along sides. Put a funnel on top of the waterer to prevent roosting there. Rake the front "aisle" totally, move old clean shavings from front room, place in aisle, throw fresh shavings to that small room. It's a waste to toss good shavings, so I rotate them.

Once everything gets rotated around, then the whole thing gets emptied, excess dust shop vac'd out, scrape of the bottom if needed. I expect to have to do that once a month. I pick up under the roost every day when I kick them out for breakfast and morning sun. Course there's only 4 of them.

My coop is cleaner than alot of people's houses. I obviously need a life! I've had a few friends stop in and want to see my coop because when I first got chickens they said it would stink so bad I'd get rid of them. They are all shocked when they see how clean everything is. It really only takes a few minutes a day to clean up.

I clean out bedding as needed and then wash everything (walls, floor, lights, roosts) down with pinesol and bleach. I designed my coop with cleaning in mind. The walls are all paneling and the floor is vinyl. Yesterday I even washed down the outside of all spiders and bug poops and cleaned the windows.

I also added the wireless thermometer, an additional outlet and weather stripping around the windows in preparation for winter.

I love my girls.

Wish I'd thought of caulking while I had everything out today.

DH is the king of caulk but he's out of town again.

I will be building a tractor soon -- when I get the materials together -- and I am planning on caulking the dickens out of it. I've had experience in the past with leg mites, and they love crevices and hiding places.

What kind of paint did you use, Flintrock?)

Apparently I am the only one that doesn't know, since no one else has asked the question. What is a "manure box"?
