Temperature Spikes: Stories Wanted

Ok, so if I try BCM's again, I will go with the lower temp range. Hmm, I wonder if I can convince my husband to let me do this all over again . . .

18 chicks in all., got 1 that i do not think will make it
lowest of the hatch were cuckoo marans, and silkies. best was yellow/white easter egger mixes and silver laced polish ( i had more polish eggs than any other, they are my own eggs)
altho, i do not have the count of what exactly went into the bator.... to much data!~
plus, some where mine, some were bought eggs (very reputible sellers)

end of day 22, i couldn't stand it and helped the rest hatch.
i know that is highly debatable!
about half the "helped hatch" chicks survived

remember, i do not know how long temps soared, it had been 12 hours since i last checked temps.
in all... i think i had a great hatch. especially since i expected NONE to hatch
of course, now i am second guessing the decision to "help hatch"
its just late in the game the other chicks are playing soccer with the eggs!
what the heck!

thanks so much for all the support!
i have a re-newed faith now and ready to set the next batch!

in case it matters, i am running a styro-foam forced air bator.
think it is little giant brand,
was my first hatch in this bator
used a commercial egg turner

i am being short and to the point tonight...
taking care of new hatchlings, selling older chicks, worked all day, and now have the 7 month old grandson here who is boss of the house!

thanks again and love this forum!

Lanie that is a wonderful hatch considering the stress of the temperature spike. Hope you get some rest tonight (sounds like you've earned it!)
Oh btw, congrats on that grandson, too!

Justtoni, hope you don't have any issues from your spike.

Hello every one,

Nice results for the hatch.I am happy for you.
Going into lock down later today so we will to have long to wait for results.

Maybe it is just me.......but my previous hatches, the BCM'S went more days than my lighter shell
chicks.BR/EE......... My last one hatched day 25 last time.a really beautiful chick.just slow I guess.

Good luck and thank you for the support.

Such a ditz sometimes. Just reread one of my posts.had meant to say set cuckoo maran and blue cooper maran..
Also,LANIETX.....Do you know how long your temp was high.
Thanks

Can you sneak a couple out and listen to the shell? Sometimes if something is still moving you can hear it. (I've even scratched at the shell to get it's attention.)
Just don't put any that stink near your face!

I candled them all and there was no movement so I cracked them open to see what happened. They were definitely dead

Of the 11 there were 6 that developed to the end (or very near). 2 were very small so maybe were either abnormal or died a few days early. Shouldn't heat spikes have killed them much earlier. I didn't have any temp issues during lockdown. If anything they would have been cooler since I was keeping the thermometer on top of the eggs and kept it right at 99.5-100 during lockdown (had been more like 101.5 or even 102 for the hatch).

Any thoughts anyone??

@ Justton: My temp spiked to around 105-107 for roughly 10 hours while I was at work. It killed off all the dark polish, but the buff polish survived and were fine. This was in the last day or two of hatching.

@ Sport: If your humidity was off, then the chicks may have either gotten shrink wrapped (which you'd notice on the ones you cracked open) or they may have been too bloated from too much humidity and either not been able to shift around to hatch or else drowned. They also sometimes just die, and there's not too much you can do about that.

I did a pretty low humidity hatch overall. 30-40% during the first part and right around 60% during lockdown until the Barred Rocks pipped then the humidty was very high at times (70-95%). They were not stuck to their membranes at all. It peeled off easily. I'm not sure what a shrink wrapped chick looks like but I wouldn't describe them like that. Their membranes did look very thick to me. I peeled the whole shell off and the membranes never tore. Had to tear them specially.
