They start selling at 9AM. Be there then or get lost in the shuffle. You'll know it when you see it - there will be a crowd milling around carrying boxes and cages. Andrew was the name of the guy selling chickens last time we were there.

Oh, and if any of you buy a speckled sussex pullet, or a white plymouth rock, or a deleware and don't give it to me, your names are all mud.

Have fun!

This is the Amish Community in Delano about 10 miles south of Etawah. They have a small animal sale the last Sat. of each month. They also have lots of produce for sale every day of the week. Look for sign on right on 411S for a Winery and for Delano Community Market. They will also have a sign for Small Animal Sale. Turn right at sign, follow road past winery, go under railroad underpass on right on Needle Eye Lane. If you go, be sure to drive through the community. They work their fields with huge horses - no cars, no electricity. They walk their horses on a treadmill at the side of the creek to draw water up to their storage tanks for their fields. It's a trip back in time for sure. I think half of the East TN BYC is going to be there tomorrow except me.

in case anyone was wondering, the winery is Savannah Oaks Winery and their address is 1817 Delano Rd. from the map it looks like the turn off for Needle Eye Lane (where the Amish market is located) is the 3rd street past the winery... so that's 411S, right on Delano Rd and then right on Needle Eye Ln.

hope to see you guys there! i've got the Element loaded with cages and i hope to fill them all!

biblio - I will keep you all posted on available birds. I think I will make a habit of posting in this thread. I know BYCers would be good parents and I don't have to worry like I do most the time.

I will probrably (not 100%) hatch another clutch of Delawares in August/September. That would put them about 5 month old come Feb. and they would be starting to lay the end of winter/first of spring. Like I said, I'll keep you all posted.

So, what did you all get at the Amish community today? I didn't get a chance to go... I shouldn't even want to with all the birds I have right now. I'm just curious as to what all people bought.... post pics!!!

I want to know, too. You know how you tell someone about something and when they try it, it flops? Please tell me you had a great time today. And Justin, you'd better have pictures of chickens in people's laps!

BB? did you get there today?

tnchickenut - keep me in mind for your next Deleware hatch, also. I have 2 astrolorps and I think that a deleware would just set them off.

I like to color coordinate everything.

umm. my addiction therapist has instructed me not to discuss this topic any longer..............................

it happened again. i just can't be trusted.

went today (thanks Karen for telling us about it!) and i came home with 3 (supposedly and most likely) Araucana pullets (3 months old), 2 Bourbon Red poults (2-3 weeks), and 2 Royal Palm poults (3-4 weeks).

i can't believe i finally BOUGHT TURKEYS!!! they look hilarious in with my 3 week old chicks.

i also bought some yummy looking apple butter, blueberry preserves, salsa, whole wheat bread, tomatoes (already ate one and it was delicious), and cucumbers.

i was very proud of the fact that i didn't purchase a 200 lb pig and try to bring it home in the car. or the Holstein calf. or a trio of breeding turkeys. or that one goat. or the ducks. or some more geese. and especially the guineas- wow, they really are loud.

then i started feeling a bit guilty when i stopped on the way home and bought a pair of Wheaten Marans (4 months) from a tnchickenut.... especially since i had to rush home and finish building tractor #2 (i finished tractor #1 yesterday) so the chickens would have a place to live.... i'm officially out of housing options.

oh wait, did i forget to mention that between yesterday afternoon and 30 mins ago, i had 5 more chicks hatch? and that there are still 3 eggs left to possibly hatch............

so, i'm up to 32 chickens (hopefully 35 soon), 4 turkeys, and 2 geese.

oh my god, that's 41 birds to feed and house and love.

i haven't decided which.

i saw Justin and Louis there too. We had a bit of a chat before they opened the doors to the sale, but after that it was everyone for themselves! i didn't see Louis again (hope he made it out alive and with birds). saw Justin inside trying to flag down a "nice young man in a straw hat with a clipboard" (that's who i was instructed to look for to buy things) while i was doing the same, but lost him again after that. it was crazy. i paid for the Araucanas, walked to the car to get my cage, walked back (7 mins, tops) and found that the cage that had been holding about 20 birds was down to 7. of course, the lighter colored ones that i had wanted were gone, but the ones i got are very pretty.

i'll go down and get pics of everyone once i cool off and my feet stop aching. i've been going non-stop since 5:45 am and i am NOT a morning person.

eta: pics now up
