hey y'all . Here in Nashville. Interested in keeping a few hens, but have no experience nor due any family members. I have read around several sites about getting started but I'm curious about when to start this process as far as time of year. I will probably start with pullets, maybe 3. so that should give me a more stable group to start with but since our fall and winters can be pretty tame is this acceptable to start relatively soon? ( I'm sure spring would be best but id like to get the ball rolling ) Also I'm curious about breeds. I'm more interested in eggs, poop, pest control and clean up. Id like to get 3 different and like the looks of the barred rock, and RR. Additionally non-typical colored eggs would be cool but would prefer mild mannered and easy of care over egg color.

Hey and welcome to BYC! Checkout the "Middle Tennessee" thread. There's lots of information and people to help you acquire a few pullets. I'm not a breeder but there's several that are around here. I live in Murfreesboro.

There is a member here called Poultrylady who lives in Dunlap...she has very nice RIR and several other breeds. You may want to PM her and check it out.

Hey, have just found this thread! We live in Adamsville TN which is about an hour south of Jackson, right by the AL/MS border. Everyone around here just seems to keep a lot of mutts so we are trying to start a breeding program for five or six breeds. I guess we are kind of middle TN but a West kind of middle!

Hey welcome! We're in just here around Cross Plains. Like the other poster said, there is a central TN thread that is really great. Come join us and learn from our mistakes and success!
