Well....that bird has died. I called the sellers to let them know. Turns out they have only had the two sussex for 3-4 weeks and they were sick when they bought them! They got them from the breeder, Curt Hein (SP?) here in Texas, he told them it was a cold. I'm going to call the breeder tomorrow and find out what he has to say. Now I am worried about the others, but they have been together for 3-4 weeks, so I'm not sure to be worried or not. Sheesh!

I'm so sorry about that poor bird. And mad too - the people who had it should have treated and gotten them well before sending them off. Change in environment, and sick - perhaps too much for the bird to take all at once.

Just chiming in here to add that you may also want to get the birds on a good nutritional supplement right away to try to shore up their immune systems. Avia Charge 2000 is often recommended on BYC. Durvet V&E also an option. Maybe also add some fresh plain yogurt. I also find that a bit of very fresh fruit and veggies everyday seems to make birds happier, and likely healthier. Sunflower seeds too. None of this is going to cure something that needs serious medicine, but these things may help strengthen bird's systems and spirits - something for them to look forward to....

A supplement is a good idea....just to help their systems. If a breeder has CRD in his flock, should he still sell those birds after they appear all better since they will always carry it? I would most like to return the remaining 7 birds to the seller, disinfect the coop and start over with healthy stock. Does this seem like a good idea? Or just keep going with the others if they seem fine? I just don't know how common CRD is and if many birds have had it.

This broad-spectrum antibiotic is a shot-gun approach to the problems that can occur during the growing period. Colds, chronic respiratory disease, air sac infection, fowl cholera, and other diseases can be helped if treated early. Terramycin can be used on poultry if they are not laying yet. Dosage 1 tsp. per gallon for maintenance 2 tsp. per gallon for treatment. (NOT OK to eat eggs during treatment with these antibiotics.)

so on this thread, my next question is what to do about the birds that didn't get sick. if we are treating for an unknown, and the treatment works, aren't the birds that survive now carriers? it's not within my means to build another coop for the birds who were separated before they showed signs of illness (iknow, i'm doing it all wrong). so then what? you reintroduce them, they get sick and treated with a new antibiotic, then the survivors sit at the survivors table and all is well ish?

If they never showed symptoms, they probably are not carriers. You can be exposed and not catch something, or you'd get sick with every illness of every person in your doctor's waiting room, right?

Hi, Aureomycin/chlortetracycline hydrochloride 25g per pound is aprox 200mg per 1 teaspoon to a gallon of water or Duramycin-10/tetracycline hydrochloride 25g per pound i beleive the tera is the same dosage. The bag of Auro states that the whole bag 6.4 oz will do 100gal at 100mg Auro and the treatement for CRD is 400 to 800mg or 2 to 4 teaspoons per gallon. I hope that helps If i bring in birds they are always kept away from my other birds medicated and given vita, mineral suppliment before exposed to my other birds. What to do when you have had an illness show up in your flock is a touchy situation. Just remember that illness is always around no matter how hard you try to be sterile and the ones that have compromised immunity at the time one of the illnesses are sweeping through your barn are the ones that are likely to catch it. Also I think shows and swaps are great and interesting they to are places where people from all over bring there beautiful birds to show them off and sell. These people take great risks of there birds getting sick because as much as everyone wants to think these places are disease free it is impossable. Then they bring the birds home and expose the rest of there birds. I am in no way saying this is bad i am just trying to say illness is present no matter what, that is why it is so important to try and keep your birds to there optimal health to be resistant to all those nasty bugs.

I use 1/8th teaspoon/gallon. Like the previous post, they shouldn't need it, but it won't hurt them to run a few days with it. If the mix your using is in metric, Google the conversion . The brand I got from the feed store works out to 1/8th tsp per gallon.
