Tethers and Why They Should Never Be Used on Peafowl

Ive never seen shown peacocks nor have i tried to tether one. But that doesnt mean it isnt and cant be done properly. I get that Kathy. I would assume the judges supervise when the tethering is needed or required. Thats like when somebody has a bird of prey. Well ya dont use the legband tether connected to the leash the whole time ....just when needed for a little control. See what Im getting at. Also if that peas head is covered while tethered it may not freak as much. Just thoughts on this is all Im saying, I get that most say Tethers be d***ed. I try and keep an open mind. Kid didnt get what was required of trying to tether sounds like. What little I know about peas I would prefer some kind of cage. Better to maybe ask why this is also prefered as well by falconers. Thought provoking to say the least.

There is a part of poultry that you can show peafowl but I'm the first to show peafowl at this fair. The rules state that if you have a bird that can fly it must be tethered. Flying in their definition is a bird like a pigeon or a dove or peafowl. Not chickens. The showmanship part you must put you bird on a piece of carpet that is on a table and it must stand still, show parts of your bird, and answer questions. Otherwise when it's your pen area your bird stays in their pen and they judge how well the birds area is, if it's clean, food and water. I was at home trying to get her used to a tether and when I looked at tethers for birds of prey some people had their falcons with both legs and some only one leg. I thought having both legs tied they can fight and fight and nothing. Obviously that didn't work. One leg is working for me. It makes it so their flight pattern gets messed making it so they can't fly anymore.

I get all that and hope you do as well. Since you are the first did you tell the judges peafowl dont like to use a tether? And if so it should only be for control. Or suggest maybe alternitives? Extremely hard to get a peafowl to stand still moreso in a unfamiliar place..... I would work on that without the tether being tied to anything. What Im getting at is the tether is only dangerous when it comes tight with the leash or whatever you want to call it.

Well, the fair's not here yet. It's at the end of July. But that's a good idea.

So what you are saying is that since there has never been a Peafowl shown at this fair, there is no precedent for you to follow. You are having to experiment(1 leg vs. 2 legs tethered) and ad lib to try to make it work, correct? If the bird must be tethered if it flies, than the obvious goal is to restrain the bird and keep it from panicking and flying around, if this is the case I would think they would allow a body harness such as Zaz posted. Have you spoken to any of the fair officials regarding this issue?

Surprisingly Thora stands still so long as I have her on carpet or on my arm she sits. Tether is only used during showmanship part. Otherwise no tether just a # band around the leg that can come off and they can run around their pen as long as they want.

Invite a bunch of your friends over and do a practice run, I bet she won't behave the same with a bunch of people and noise.

Could you make a harness that spreads out the distribution of the weight across proper load bearing bones on the birds body? Or are birds bones too delicate (hollow bones, you know) to handle stress from the 90° axis?

And AGAIN YOU CAN STILL BREAK THAT ONE LEG BY DOING SO. LET THE JUDGES KNOW THAT! And yes what casportpony said. Your bird may not act so calm or stand still in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people all around. My birds totally freak out when small children get around them. Or even if two or more people come up they dont know they get nervous and go to walking fast at the least. So something to think about as well.Good luck.

X2 Un-imprinted birds that act fine when I alone enter their pens, do NOT act fine if a stranger stands outside their pen looking at them.
