Glad it worked for you. How many others do you think there are?I used the cone/bleed out method on the turkeys. I know what you mean about worrying about not cutting them the right way but let me say that it would be hard not to cut the artery there is not much there so when you cut you should hit it easy. When I did the 1st turkey I was worried that I would miss so I did not cut deep enough but I noticed right off that he was not bleeding very fast and so I made a deeper cut. The 2nd one was a lot easier cause I knew I had to cut deeper. You just have to get your mind around doing it and not worry. Once you get your mind set to just do it you will be able to get threw the 1st one then the rest will be easy.
Well I got my 1st coon last night. I got up to check the trap at 2 am and found the coon in the trap so I will put him out of my misery a little later when the sun is up so I can see better. Don't want to miss him and have to shoot him more then 1 time if I don't have to. He has eaten 6 of my chickens already sure glad I got the trap to work this time. Thanks Ms Jellybean for the peanut butter advice. I put the peanut butter on a plate and put chicken feed on the peanut butter. I also greased the moving parts of the trap I think that was more of the problem then anything.
That is really nice of you to send them money. And I thought this is the time for your summer vacation. My son who teaches in Houston is enjoying the time off and he flew to South Carolina yesterday to spend 2 weeks with his gf family. I also have a friend in Ho Chi Minh city, who is a part time Math teacher. She claimed she has no income during the summer time ... and not sure how she and her 2 kids can survive. Her kids, a 13 yr girl and a 11yr boy, are the real "karate kids". Last month, the boy won a tournament there and earned a prize of $40. The mom "borrowed" this to pay the rent. I told her that I will send her $100 today to help relieve the summer drought.
Hens, why don't you take the kids home and babysit them right in your house. This way, you can have little John watering the chicken while little Debbie watering the plants. Once they are done with the watering and feeding, you can give them some exotic instant Chinese noodle. Confucius said "let's shoot several birds in one shot".
Ready for a long stretch of hot, dry days.
I didn't think you could get rabies from eating cooked meat. I know it is passed on through the saliva. hmmmm..... Not that I want to eat raccoon. Not sure I would eat a coon that is wild around here. I would be worried about rabies. The only way I would eat one was to cage it up for a month and feed it out to make sure that it was rabies free!
That would be very unnerving.Hung, I noticed you put my name first!!
That is exactly what it sounded like....BBQ coon.![]()
*************
Harley, Ken made that mistake. When we processed our turkeys, he didn't cut deep enough on one of them. Ken had walked off to let it bleed out. I turned around to check on it and said, 'Honey it is watching me'. He had to go back and cut a little deeper. That was a bit unnerving.

Cute!Awwwww
Thank goodness broilers are not as cute..
I won't be naming them either. Probably just call them "The Nuggets"
They'll also be in a pen so they won't be able to be as social as my lovey girls
Or names like Wishbone, Drumstick, Wingman, etc.
Nor would I. I think the neighbors would need to keep them for me. You know Kiera will name them for you. Then you can tell her "we are having "Barney" for supper tonight". Years of therapy needed then.I don't want to be able to tell them apart![]()
Yeah!GUYS!!!! We got 1" of rain.![]()

Seriously, I think it is great that you are venturing into this. Not sure it is something that I could do, but I'd like to get to that point. It is getting so I don't even want to go to the grocery store to buy food anymore with all they are doing to what we eat.
I spent 3 hours working in the yard this morning. It is amazing what 2 inches of rain and cooler temps will do for grass growth. It had been 7.5 days since I mowed last and the grass had really grown! Found all kinds of new ant mounds too. I guess the rain is good for them as well. My Bayer fire ant powder works really well and I got all of them treated. They will be dead by tomorrow. The yard looks so much better now.
And now I have a killer headache that I am trying to ignore. My friend told me about Excedrin Migraine. She said it was great for sinus/allergy headaches. I'm going to have to get some to try. Nothing I have works.
When it comes to food, my mom taught me to always think of my sister first. So here we go!Hung, I noticed you put my name first!!![]()

Yes. She's my Silver EE, the one that had her tail feathers removed by the RIR sisters.Good Morning!
Eggs look good. Is Arnet an Ameracauna?
I hope you find something that will help with our sinus headaches. My sinus headache from Saturday is finally gone today. Woke up with it though. Went out for a ride in the 90% humidity (yuck!) and it is now gone. It was so good to be out riding again. I only go out once last week... I hope I can get out a few more times this week.
I have a question.... How often do you give your birds treats?
I didn't know that either.no I rarely do 2 babysitting jobs in one day. The first job was for a couple who were getting re-certified to watch foster children...as in babysitting them while the foster parents go out for a date night. Here in Texas, you can't leave foster kids with just anyone, they have to go through a pretty rigorous training once a year before you can leave them. So, I have some friends who have foster kids and they have friends who have gone through this training and so I was watching their kids, clear as mud????
The evening job was with the sitting company I work for.

That sounds good! Can you post the recipe? My galette was so good tonight! Letting the tomatoes and basil sit for a few hours makes a big difference in the flavor. So did adding more bacon. It was so good Trevor ate 2 big pieces - half of it. He also had 2 pieces of my carrot cake - one before supper and one after, plus some of the biscuits I baked last night. He was very full when he left.
I like to feed him like that. I don't think he eats enough. He doesn't usually snack and doesn't usually eat that much at a meal, although I think he is eating a better amount now. He is 6'2" and only weighs about 150 pounds (I think - he might be up to 160 now). Anyways.... the house smells amazing right now.

Thanks for the info. I plan on processing chickens in the future and will be using this method. It's much better than wringing their necks! LOLI used the cone/bleed out method on the turkeys. Yes, the heat is on the way. I'm just glad we haven't had those long stretch of 100 degree weather like we have in the future.Ready for a long stretch of hot, dry days.
