I used the cone/bleed out method on the turkeys. I know what you mean about worrying about not cutting them the right way but let me say that it would be hard not to cut the artery there is not much there so when you cut you should hit it easy. When I did the 1st turkey I was worried that I would miss so I did not cut deep enough but I noticed right off that he was not bleeding very fast and so I made a deeper cut. The 2nd one was a lot easier cause I knew I had to cut deeper. You just have to get your mind around doing it and not worry. Once you get your mind set to just do it you will be able to get threw the 1st one then the rest will be easy.

Well I got my 1st coon last night. I got up to check the trap at 2 am and found the coon in the trap so I will put him out of my misery a little later when the sun is up so I can see better. Don't want to miss him and have to shoot him more then 1 time if I don't have to. He has eaten 6 of my chickens already sure glad I got the trap to work this time. Thanks Ms Jellybean for the peanut butter advice. I put the peanut butter on a plate and put chicken feed on the peanut butter. I also greased the moving parts of the trap I think that was more of the problem then anything.
Glad it worked for you. How many others do you think there are?

And I thought this is the time for your summer vacation. My son who teaches in Houston is enjoying the time off and he flew to South Carolina yesterday to spend 2 weeks with his gf family. I also have a friend in Ho Chi Minh city, who is a part time Math teacher. She claimed she has no income during the summer time ... and not sure how she and her 2 kids can survive. Her kids, a 13 yr girl and a 11yr boy, are the real "karate kids". Last month, the boy won a tournament there and earned a prize of $40. The mom "borrowed" this to pay the rent. I told her that I will send her $100 today to help relieve the summer drought.

Hens, why don't you take the kids home and babysit them right in your house. This way, you can have little John watering the chicken while little Debbie watering the plants. Once they are done with the watering and feeding, you can give them some exotic instant Chinese noodle. Confucius said "let's shoot several birds in one shot".

Ready for a long stretch of hot, dry days.
That is really nice of you to send them money.

Not sure I would eat a coon that is wild around here. I would be worried about rabies. The only way I would eat one was to cage it up for a month and feed it out to make sure that it was rabies free!
I didn't think you could get rabies from eating cooked meat. I know it is passed on through the saliva. hmmmm..... Not that I want to eat raccoon.

Hung, I noticed you put my name first!!

That is exactly what it sounded like....BBQ coon.

Harley, Ken made that mistake. When we processed our turkeys, he didn't cut deep enough on one of them. Ken had walked off to let it bleed out. I turned around to check on it and said, 'Honey it is watching me'. He had to go back and cut a little deeper. That was a bit unnerving.

Lisa :)
That would be very unnerving.

Awwwww :(

Thank goodness broilers are not as cute..
I won't be naming them either. Probably just call them "The Nuggets"
They'll also be in a pen so they won't be able to be as social as my lovey girls
Cute!

Nor would I. I think the neighbors would need to keep them for me. You know Kiera will name them for you. Then you can tell her "we are having "Barney" for supper tonight". Years of therapy needed then.

Seriously, I think it is great that you are venturing into this. Not sure it is something that I could do, but I'd like to get to that point. It is getting so I don't even want to go to the grocery store to buy food anymore with all they are doing to what we eat.

I spent 3 hours working in the yard this morning. It is amazing what 2 inches of rain and cooler temps will do for grass growth. It had been 7.5 days since I mowed last and the grass had really grown! Found all kinds of new ant mounds too. I guess the rain is good for them as well. My Bayer fire ant powder works really well and I got all of them treated. They will be dead by tomorrow. The yard looks so much better now.
And now I have a killer headache that I am trying to ignore. My friend told me about Excedrin Migraine. She said it was great for sinus/allergy headaches. I'm going to have to get some to try. Nothing I have works.

She probably WILL name them...lol
But she might not be as traumatized as one would think. The other day, I got know if I already posted it, but she wanted some hardboiled eggs and when I asked if she was sure that's what she wanted for her snack, she replied with "Yeah, I love those baby chicks!"

The last straw for me was Monday night when I went to cook dinner. I bought chicken just last week from the store, immediately put it in the freezer when I got home. Put it in the fridge Sunday night to thaw.
It had this awful grayness to it. Some greenish iridescent hard bits on the tips. Some of the pieces LOOKED like they had turned, but there was seriously NO smell to it..NONE!
I threw it away anyway, but..what do you have to do to chicken to get it to NOT smell once it's turned?

We use BC powder for serious headaches. I don't get them often but Josh gets migraines ever so often.
It tastes AWFUL, but it works really fast....

Does Kiera think the eggs are baby chicks? She's 3 right? Who knows what is going on in that little brain of hers. :) Kids just amaze me. There are days I'd love to have another one, but most of the time you couldn't pay me to go through all that again.

I've tried BC Powder (just saw it's flavored now) before. Doesn't work. Ibuprofen and Aleve don't work either. I have a big bottle of aspirin that didn't work. Not sure what to do with all this pain medicine I have that doesn't work for my headaches. Aleve works great for other pain though so I will keep that around. It's the only thing I have that takes the pain in my ribs away when they act up.

When it comes to food, my mom taught me to always think of my sister first. So here we go!

Plus, working in industrial environment for many years, I learned to think "safety first". So here we go again !

Good Morning!

Eggs look good. Is Arnet an Ameracauna?
Yes. She's my Silver EE, the one that had her tail feathers removed by the RIR sisters.

My sinus headache from Saturday is finally gone today. Woke up with it though. Went out for a ride in the 90% humidity (yuck!) and it is now gone. It was so good to be out riding again. I only go out once last week... I hope I can get out a few more times this week.

I have a question.... How often do you give your birds treats?
I hope you find something that will help with our sinus headaches. :(

I usually, but not always, give mine something in the mornings. Half a cabbage, watermelon rind, leftovers, or some grass. I don't free range mine, so I figure they need something to dig around for. In the evenings, I give them half a coffee can of hen scratch.I use the Texas Naturals scratch, no corn or soy is in it. Looks pretty good. They get their feed free choice.

no I rarely do 2 babysitting jobs in one day. The first job was for a couple who were getting re-certified to watch foster children...as in babysitting them while the foster parents go out for a date night. Here in Texas, you can't leave foster kids with just anyone, they have to go through a pretty rigorous training once a year before you can leave them. So, I have some friends who have foster kids and they have friends who have gone through this training and so I was watching their kids, clear as mud????
The evening job was with the sitting company I work for.
:)
I didn't know that either.

My galette was so good tonight! Letting the tomatoes and basil sit for a few hours makes a big difference in the flavor. So did adding more bacon. :) It was so good Trevor ate 2 big pieces - half of it. He also had 2 pieces of my carrot cake - one before supper and one after, plus some of the biscuits I baked last night. He was very full when he left. :) I like to feed him like that. I don't think he eats enough. He doesn't usually snack and doesn't usually eat that much at a meal, although I think he is eating a better amount now. He is 6'2" and only weighs about 150 pounds (I think - he might be up to 160 now). Anyways.... the house smells amazing right now. :)
That sounds good! Can you post the recipe?

Thanks for the info. I plan on processing chickens in the future and will be using this method. It's much better than wringing their necks! LOL

Glad you got your coon. Do you think you have more than one?

Ready for a long stretch of hot, dry days.
Yes, the heat is on the way. I'm just glad we haven't had those long stretch of 100 degree weather like we have in the future.

I hope to get this finished before the storm comes through. Looks like some heavy rain & wind is heading our way.

Been super busy at work. Not with a lot of orders, but doing a lot of cleaning and rearranging. There is always something to do. Sometimes I don't think we will ever get finished!

I'm still getting 3-5 eggs per day. Funny thing, I haven't had a green egg in 3 days now. Do chickens stop laying for several days? I thought maybe she had laid under the brooder and the egg got covered up in litter, but I got the rake out tonight and looked around for it and found nothing.

Storms moving in, I better get off here. Harley hope everything over your way is ok. Take care all!

I don't have a recipe, I made it up as I went along. I took some tomatoes (2 colors to make it pretty) added some (about 1/4 cup sliced up) basil (Sweet Aussie and purple leaf) and some hot and spicy oregano (about a teaspoon or so) and several slices of crisp bacon, crumbled up. A bit of salt and pepper. Let the tomatoes sit with the basil for 2-3 hours in the fridge then add the rest. Roll out a pie crust to 14 inches. Pile the tomato mix in the center so it is about 7 inches in diameter and bring the crust up around it. Kind of pleat the crust as you bring it up. Bake in 375* oven for about 40 minutes. You could add some feta or goat cheese to it as well. I posted a photo of the tomatoes yesterday....

All the rain is east of us tonight. It's hitting the lakes though so that is good. Looks like a nice big rain for some. :)
