So the cyanide in the seeds doesn't bother them? Interesting.....
Now you are going to get me in trouble....

If I chopped the apples up by hand, I take the seeds out. If I use the processor, seeds stay in. Let's just say that for the last 3 years, I have not had a problem.

I used the cone/bleed out method on the turkeys. I know what you mean about worrying about not cutting them the right way but let me say that it would be hard not to cut the artery there is not much there so when you cut you should hit it easy. When I did the 1st turkey I was worried that I would miss so I did not cut deep enough but I noticed right off that he was not bleeding very fast and so I made a deeper cut. The 2nd one was a lot easier cause I knew I had to cut deeper. You just have to get your mind around doing it and not worry. Once you get your mind set to just do it you will be able to get threw the 1st one then the rest will be easy.

Well I got my 1st coon last night. I got up to check the trap at 2 am and found the coon in the trap so I will put him out of my misery a little later when the sun is up so I can see better. Don't want to miss him and have to shoot him more then 1 time if I don't have to. He has eaten 6 of my chickens already sure glad I got the trap to work this time. Thanks Ms Jellybean for the peanut butter advice. I put the peanut butter on a plate and put chicken feed on the peanut butter. I also greased the moving parts of the trap I think that was more of the problem then anything.

Way to go Harley! Was it a young one?

Lisa :)

no I rarely do 2 babysitting jobs in one day. The first job was for a couple who were getting re-certified to watch foster children...as in babysitting them while the foster parents go out for a date night. Here in Texas, you can't leave foster kids with just anyone, they have to go through a pretty rigorous training once a year before you can leave them. So, I have some friends who have foster kids and they have friends who have gone through this training and so I was watching their kids, clear as mud????
The evening job was with the sitting company I work for.
:)
And I thought this is the time for your summer vacation. My son who teaches in Houston is enjoying the time off and he flew to South Carolina yesterday to spend 2 weeks with his gf family. I also have a friend in Ho Chi Minh city, who is a part time Math teacher. She claimed she has no income during the summer time ... and not sure how she and her 2 kids can survive. Her kids, a 13 yr girl and a 11yr boy, are the real "karate kids". Last month, the boy won a tournament there and earned a prize of $40. The mom "borrowed" this to pay the rent. I told her that I will send her $100 today to help relieve the summer drought.

Hens, why don't you take the kids home and babysit them right in your house. This way, you can have little John watering the chicken while little Debbie watering the plants. Once they are done with the watering and feeding, you can give them some exotic instant Chinese noodle. Confucius said "let's shoot several birds in one shot".

Ready for a long stretch of hot, dry days.

I wish you know how to make stew soup, and can use the coon , and save the turkeys. Sorry, too late!

Not sure I would eat a coon that is wild around here. I would be worried about rabies. The only way I would eat one was to cage it up for a month and feed it out to make sure that it was rabies free!

A simple way to find out is ... you just eat a few spoons of this newly made soup. Then if 1 hr later you still ok then ......... Lisa and I and others will jump in and finish the rest.

Have a wonderful early turkey day uncle Harl

Thanks! That actually helps.
I know mistakes will be made, I just...don't WANT them to happen obviously, while dealing with living thing.
Cut to shallow, it takes too long, cut too deep and you get the windpipe and cause a little more trouble than they need.
I'm ordering Friday! Just 7 this first time. I don't have enough space for too many.
to hit my $25 mark I'm also getting 2 Faverolles and a Russian Orloff. I figure this way, they'll be comfortable by winter, since they're more cold hardy birds anyway.

I've heard raccoon is hard to cook right, because it's so greasy.
Doesn't seem like you're missing much..lol

Not sure if cooking is hard or not but the taste is not so fancy. I trapped a lot but never eat one .. until I visited a friend in Mexia and his mom in law cooked curry for us. The meat a little tough and lots of fat. I told her next time I preferred BBQ... (since I heard of a great BBQ restaurant in Mexia , rated in top 50 by Texas Monthly). I hope she did not confuse and thought I wanted BBQ coon.

That is exactly what it sounded like....BBQ coon.

Harley, Ken made that mistake. When we processed our turkeys, he didn't cut deep enough on one of them. Ken had walked off to let it bleed out. I turned around to check on it and said, 'Honey it is watching me'. He had to go back and cut a little deeper. That was a bit unnerving.

Awwwww :(

Thank goodness broilers are not as cute..
I won't be naming them either. Probably just call them "The Nuggets"
They'll also be in a pen so they won't be able to be as social as my lovey girls
