Texas BYC Cafe

I will. I just don't want to get them too late because they can NOT stay inside like the last batch did when it was cold.
And I wen home on lunch and was greeted y a $600 water bill! We don't  water our lawn, irrigate, AND our water was out  for like..a WEEK..there's just no possible way. Put a n and they said "Oh you must have a substantial leak! But that would still be your responsibility"
Um...no. We live in a little house, on a little lot, and we're outside, in pretty much ALL areas, everyday. We would have DEFINATELY noticed a leak that big. here is NOTHING. Not even a moist or soggy spot. And definitely no standing or running water.

So, long story short, no ordering this week, or the next. I'm sure that sets shipping back even further. Might be smarter to wait until spring.
Until then I'll check out the prices at the market or Sprouts...
And I've been watching so many processing videos, I'm sure I'd look like a psycho if someone we're to look at my YouTube history. lol.

Someone needs to come check on the water thing. That's not normal. Don't let that drop. It could very well NOT be your leak.

Howdy y'all. I have been hanging out on TEG and checking in BYC just to lurk a little. But I just found this thread and decided to chime in. I am a blabber-fingers and just can't shutup!

My husband and I, along with chickens, horses, and dogs will be moving from southeast Texas to the Tyler area, in the north part of Smith county. We are leaving a 2500 sq ft brick home in town for a 1500 sq ft (coughs politely) manufactured home on 8 acres. Seriously, I just want to go outside to play and don't give much of a care about the house.
lau.gif
I'll just have a garage sale for the stuff that won't fit! We should be closing by mid August, then have to do work on the house before we do anything else. It seems some crackhead or idiot really needed about $20 worth of copper wire in bits and pieces from under the house and all the wires from the breaker box and it will cost 4 or 5K to repair. And plumbing is missing in key places, like the kitchen sink. I can deal with that. We also have to rip out the flooring, some of the sub flooring and replace it. Paint, lay down new floors and THEN I can go out to play!!!! WHOO-HOO
wee.gif

We have to fence and cross fence the place, hang gates and all that fun stuff. We're moving a 12'x24' storage building in and then adding lean-to's on both sides for the tractor, implements and flatbed trailer my DH has bought for me.
love.gif
Ya' gotta love a man who knows what's really important! We have to build chicken tractors for temporary until we get a barn built for the horses and a permanent chicken coop/run. We're giving ourselves till the end of the year to get moved. That way, we don't have to stress ourselves out more, jumping through flaming circus hoops, trying to get everything done in a few weeks.

I am freaking out because I will miss the fall garden season. With all that we have to do, I don't think I'll be able to fit that in. The soil is sand. Like beach sand without the salt. I'll have lots of work to do on the garden! Here in southeast Texas, I garden all year long. In winter I grow onions, broccoli, cauliflower, greens, lettuce and cabbage.

Is anybody in the Tyler/northeast area and do you have a fall/winter garden? I don't think the climate difference is that much different, maybe a few degrees colder and less humidity, but close to the same. Do you have a garden all winter or does it freeze back?

We are so excited to be moving, can't wait to get started. Our DD, DSIL and grand daughter live up there and our new place will only be 7 miles from them. Now it is a 3 hour drive.
tongue.gif
Needless to say, we don't get to see as much of them, and they don't get to see as much of us, as we all would like.

Anybody in the area have Delaware chickens? Since I can finally have a rooster, I want Delawares!
thumbsup.gif
And I'll be looking for Muscovies, I want the big white ones. With all we have to do, spring chicks and ducklings is looking good!

Welcome from Rosenberg, TX. How exciting for you and your family. We lived in a trailer on 5 acres in Oklahoma and loved it. I understand totally what you are saying about getting outside to play. I would rather be outside than cooped up. Please keep us posted and before certain people (Harley) say anything about me, I love pictures.

Hi there! My parents live in Athens so I know that area well. Harley lives around Tyler and he has tons of chickens, but I've never heard mention of a garden. Harley?? Garden?? Good luck in your move!

Welcome to Tyler!! I live south of Tyler about 6 mile from the city limits just outside of whitehouse. It does freeze here in the winter but only for a few weeks out of the year. Well most years that is this past it was like all over a hard winter.( you know with global warming going on and all it was a long winter) i do not have that breed of chickens but I do have RIR, barred rock, EE and black silkies. That's for now waiting for spring to add more. And watch out Liza will want pics of every thing you can post. Not that she ever post pics herself. :D

Welcome to the Cafe. :)

You can winter garden here (as in zone 8 - I am west and a bit north of Tyler in McKinney). I'm learning all about it right now so that after I get my garden fixed up I can do winter gardening. You just need some hoops and plastic to cover the garden - like a green house. I know a guy that had a wonderful garden all winter long last year, even with the horrible cold temps we had. I am getting ready to plant my fall garden in a week or so. I've never tried to do two crops before, this will be my first fall to plant round 2.

I want Delawares too. I haven't been able to find a breeder for them though. Ideal carries them so they do end up in the feed stores.

Good luck on the move.
