Question!!

What is a good resource for breeding chickens, what breeds can you breed together, what do you not want to do...... just a good over all breeding book?

[/URL] so that's my wet little silkie maybe too? What do you think? I can't tell
I'm not sure, I can't tell really well from this shot but I think you maybe right.

Are those ceramic eggs thick? I saw a dead snake on the road and it looked like it had eaten an egg. Someone went to great lengths to flatten this snake so the 'egg' was broken, but it was much thicken than a regular egg. I'd say it was about a 1/4" thick shell. I can tell it was hollow. Really strange.
Yes they are hollow. Best way to kill a rat snake, if you can't find it in person. They eat it and die. Also good to help show the chickens what the nests are for. They look good too. Mom used them for decorations for years. I think they used to be solid. I remember them being much heavier than they are now.

At the beginning of this year, my husband said we could remodel the kitchen. I had the paint, backsplash, countertop, etc. picked out. We somehow got sidetracked and are trying to get a new roof on. One of these days.....

We get side tracked a lot too!!

The insurance company is going to pay for Nathan's car to be fixed. He doesn't know the amount he will get yet though. He still needs to settle with them.

I bet the people who hit him are a wee bit mad right now. Probably surprised too. They really thought they weren't at fault. lol!

Hope he comes out with some cash in the deal.

Ok here is the Silkie coop for my 2 babies!!

I think it will be just fine for the summer and fall until we get the main coop built where all of them can stay to gather under one roof but with out the pecking threat. Lol
That is so cute!!! Just perfect for your silkies!! Do you plan on raising silkies or using them to brood your other eggs?

I got no egg yesterday. So I either sold my egg layer, or she took a day off. I did have one of my EEs and BRs squatting yesterday. So hopefully I will be getting some more soon.

I have a couple of EE questiions.

This is my "squatter". Does it look like she has a "pea" comb? It has gotten a lot bigger in the last couple of weeks.

My other two EEs:

Arnet, my "eagle" is in the bottom right of the first pic. Thought I had a better one on the comp, but guess not. Still trying to work my phone/icloud options. The EE above is the one that took forever to feather out. Do ya'll think its a he or she? She does not have any tail feathers. I guess the RIR were bored, and started plucking everyone's plumage. The puffy feathers at the tail head look funny. It's not on the other two EEs.

Here is my garden. It's not near as big as JB's, but it is growing now!!

Henless, your squatter looks like it has a pea comb. Check this picture out:

Re. Arnet, I am saying female for now. Look and see if she/he is getting any saddle feathers. That is a good clue for a rooster. How old?

I love your garden.

I plan on doing both. That's why I am hoping I'm right about one bring a male and the other a female. I want to raise different breeds and the hen will be great to help me do that. I really want to learn about breeding. What breeds you can mix to get real breeds and all I need to know. There has got to be a book or website about breeding. I don't know anything about EEs so I'm not much help with that. What all chickens are considered EE? Are olive Eggers?

I know there's A LOT of info on here about breeding. Its usually in specific breed threads.
Olive Eggers are EE's or a different blue layer(Ameruancana, Crema Legbar, etc) , mixed with chocolate layer, such as a Marans or Welsummer. Those are Olive Eggers.
The "definition" of EE is very...blurred. Lol. Every has different opinion. Some say as long as it lays a colored egg. Some say it needs slate/willow legs or tufts and beards.
They're hard to define, as opposed to the Ameruacana.

That's why I like to have so many different breeds. I'd love to breed one day, but I don't want to overwhelm myself with too many. There was an article on the main page maybe last week about going from a hobby to a breeding operation in 4 years. It was very informative, but he had SOO many different breeds, I don't know how he kept up with them all.
Id love to breed Orpingtons. But I'm also starting to look into Salmon Faverolles. Very hard to narrow down, but I can cross Silkies and Barred Rocks off. Lol.

I saw that article but I haven't gotten to read it yet. But I'm going to start slowly getting different breeds, good strong males and females and then start slowly. It may take me a while as I am only getting a couple at a time to get a male and a couple of females of each breed I want but this way I can always have chicks at different stages. Each stage has it's own fun!!
Then I would like to try some different breeding. Like a cream Legbar with a Black copper maran to see if I can get a dark olive Egger!

See if we all lived closer we can play chicken Frankenstein to gather. Lol
