I am 62 and my kids are 37 and 40. They are kind, responsible, loving and successful. They haven't always been and when they were late teens and me a single mom, I didn't have much hope. I know lots of women my age with worthless sons and daughters mainly because they were able to bully and guilt their (usually) single moms into taking care of them way beyond adulthood. I believe you are doing the right thing, Laurie. You are in my prayers!
I know I raised my kids right and taught them well. As far as I know they are both born again Christians. They are 20 and 22 right now and are in their own worlds. Their dad left us when they were 2 and 4 and died 9 years ago so it has just been the 3 of us for a very long time. I know I did my best. I know I wasn't perfect. Being a single mom is the hardest job in the whole world. I know at some point they will start being human beings again. At least that is what I am told.

Thank you for the prayers. They are greatly appreciated. This has been a really hard year for me.

I found a good way to kill squash bugs and it's organic too!

My squash got over run with squash bugs. I found a way to kill them today! I went out and used it and actually saw some of them dying by the time I came in. Normally I wouldn't spray in the hot sun but I needed to do this. I hope I didn't burn the leaves. I'll spray again in the evening and in the morning. The bugs go to the ground and night so it will be easier to get them all then. :) I found eggs too that I removed and ground up in the disposal. I've been removing eggs as I see them all along but the plants got huge and they were harder to find.

I used 2 tbsp of Dawn with the water. I wanted to go all out since I have so many.

Bugs are one reason why I don't grow stuff. I love warm tomatoes picked from the vine, but just cant keep up with the bugs!!
Got my fingers that this gets them all, Laurie!!

Don't beat yourself up over the past.. God tells us to ask for forgiveness if we feel we have done something wrong.. Don't forget to forgive yourself.. We know tons of people that have had a horrible up bringing, their fine.. I guess you need to define "fine" anyho. With Jesus anything is possible..

I don't have any other bug trouble. Just these squash bugs. The soap spray is working too. I just went out and sprayed some more and did not see near as many as I did yesterday. :) Yeah! Winning the battle and soon the war!! My tomatoes are doing great. I do have a couple of toads that live in my garden and they seem to do a great job on the bugs. I have also been spraying neem oil. It really helps. Not sure why it doesn't work on squash bugs. I may not plant squash next year, or at least not the spaghetti squash. I read they prefer winter squashes over others. From the damage I see in the garden I would agree.

I'm not beating myself up over the past. It's the present I'm having a hard time with. I did the best I could with the boys. I taught them well and right. The choices they make are their own. Not mine. I just feel bad things are like they are. I like peace and for everyone to get along. I don't understand why he is being so ugly towards me. That is what is bothering me most.

My sister has made Coq au Vin. She took cooking lessons when she lived in France for several years. I don't think it is all that hard to make.

This is the coop I got when my friend gave me the production reds. 6 will fit on the roost comfortably. Can you see the really nice nesting box on the side? Well I think it was Harley who told us about these. So about 3 weeks ago I went and bought one, nailed it to the side, put some shredded newspaper in it and waited. Nothing. I even put them inside it when they were trying to do their business. Nothing. Until today!!! We got a blue egg which means one of my EEs I guess got tired of waiting her turn.
I just got back from TSC and got two more nesting boxes. I'll put them up tomorrow so they can, hopefully, use them.

This is my ummm compost thing I just built with pallets. I put the pine shavings from the coop turned bunny hutch in there and as you can see, the chickens are tearing it apart!
Love how you put the nests on the outside!! Makes a lot of sense when you don't have room inside, and it's only used for laying anyway.

I need a compost bin. I'm still debating on when to put my deep litter in my raised beds. Some say put it in a compost bin and let it sit a few months, some say put it direct on your garden area.

I ALMOST got some the other nigt. No Joke. I had my cart filled up and was about to check out.
Meyer put their overhatch list up and they only have a min order of 3, and they had BAs.
But the shipping was over $40....almost $50.
Which bought my actual cost per chick to like...almost $19..
I like my BAs. They are so pretty, specially with their combs/wattles starting to get deep red. Do you have a feed store that has been around for a long time? There is one in Longview, Horaney's Feed, has been there since I was 5 years old. They have chickes 12 months a year. Maybe you can find a Mom & Pop feed store that carries chicks longer than the big stores?

Nathan left work early today and came home in a huff to move out. He took some things and left with the intention of coming back for the rest.
Very ugly to me.
This is so sad. It was just a small amount of rent to help offset expenses and teach him responsibility.

And his brother let me know this....
"
Well, just know that you'll be paying your own rent when you get old."
He is apparently taking his brother's side in this.

I feel like such a failure right now.

Why are you a failure? You raised them and taught them right from wrong. Once they reach adulthood, they can no longer blame us for their failures. What they choose to do is just that, their choice. There comes a time when they have to be on their own, either by choice or push. We can't bail them out forever. If we do, they will never learn to stand on their own feet.

What does he think? That you had your kids so that they can support you when you get old? LOL Kids just have no idea what life is like!! I hope he realizes that karma has a way of biting you in the arse. :)

Go have yourself a big cry, get all the hurt out of your system. You don't want these feelings to build up. Feelings like this can cause problems later on. Trust me, I know. My Dr. and I pinpointed my RA symptoms emerged after an almost break down I had over my son. It was the trigger that set it all off.

Thanks for the sunflower and squash bug links. I loved how he lit up when he used the vacuum. Something about men and motors, LOLOL

Maybe there is still hope that one day these young, "I know everything" kids will actually turn out ok!

No, but it sounds yummy!

Good news on the chicken front. I've been putting my chickies to bed every night, and it's starting to pay off. I went out last night to put them to roost, and about 7 were already up on the roost! yay! They are becoming big girls now! LOL I hope to have them all roosting by the weekend.

I gave them a new treat this morning. I bought a watermelon at Walmart yesterday. I cut it up this morning and took them the rind. They really don't know what to think of it. A few are pecking at it, so we'll see how it goes. I hope they like it. I've hated having to waste the rind since I've sold all my horses.

We got a little bit of rain last night. Supposed to have more in the forecast for this afternoon. Hope everyone has a great day!

Yes! Not hard at all. I made a red version in school, then a white version recently. I couldn't tell you which one I liked more. But I have the recipe I used for the white.

Chicken and wine, how can you go wrong?? lol

!
Yes! We have a smaller feed store that still has some and they hatch some there as well.
I went in to get egg cartons and oyster shell and they had ducklings, guineas (keets?) baby quail (SOOO teeny) some black bantams, and barred rocks.
I may check back in next time I need dog food. They have some there that Laurie uses that I may check out.
My daughter wanted one of the chocolate colored ducklings so bad. Lol

I need to get some dog food. I think quail would be so fun to raise. You need a ton of them to make use of their very healthy eggs though. I hope they are all sold out when I go....

We got 1.6 inches of rain early this morning!! It makes it kind of damp to work on the house now, but that is ok. I'll take the rain. The house will dry quick enough. Since the house is all brick most of what I am painting is eves and they should stay dry unless the rain is a driving rain and I don't think we got that.
