Texas Veggie Gardeners!! Stories, Tips and ADVICE!

Honestly our soil seems decent. Its pretty soft when it isn't all dried out from the summer. But, I've never tried to plant veggies. I've only grown roses and other plants. I have a good compost pile started.

See you know what to do, fence in the plot so cows and deer can't get to it, though I use marigolds around mine, the deer and rabbits eat that and they don't go any further, don't know about cows though
HAHAHAHA... those cows can jump a six foot fence. I wouldn't have believed it until i saw it.. big fat waddling cow gracefully sails over the fence like it was nothing.. the bull... not so graceful.. he plowed through it.
They will also eat anything. I saw one walking around trying to swallow the seat belt out of a car (I have no idea where she found it either). she had the strap down her throat.. would chew and chew.. spit it out a little then start chewing again... I called my neighbor.. he laughed and said "that's why they have a magnet in their gut".. i don't know if he managed to chase her down and take seat belt away from her or not..

My new seed starting station. I got a soil warmer last saturday at North Haven Gardens. They had a seed starting class that I went to. It inspired me to build an adjustable grow light stand. It's sitting on an old coffee table in a jacuzzi tub that I have never used. I've got seed potatoes sitting out waiting for buds. I've got tomatoes, bell peppers and eggplant seed starting. (No sprouts yet!)

I want to show you the Herb Garden Fence I built! I made it out of utility panels from Tractor Supply. Ornamental fence posts, 3/4 PVC pipe, zip ties and paint from Lowe's.

I'm especially proud of my fence gate latch! It works pretty good.

for the gate hinges, I used cycle fence hardware.

This isn't the sturdiest fence ever built. But it will keep my dogs out of my herb garden!

Looks great!

In ya'lls opinion, what are the hardest veggies to kill for a newbie? I am in North Texas. I'm thinking tomatoes...but what else?

I'm in northeast Texas. Try tomatoes, cucumbers, and pole beans. Mine went wild last year even with the drought and heat. If you plant tomatoes in your rose bed, both will do better.
