Texas Veggie Gardeners!! Stories, Tips and ADVICE!

Glad you got your peaches Joan! Bummer about the plums. You got me beat on the pomegranates. 1 of the bushes bloomed a 2nd time. Only 10 to 15 blooms. I have 1 bloom left. That could change any day.
I think in February, got 3 lemons off our little lemon tree. Smallest lemon was 1 3/4 lbs. The other 2 were over 2 pounds.

We got 2 strawberry barrels. The barrels work great for growing strawberries.

Beautiful strawberries.
My pomegranats bloomes and my peacocks ate them, then they bloomed again and they were protected from the peas but a couple weeks after the fruit started forming all but i has fallen off.

My grapes are starting to ripen. I tasted one - it was awful. Hope it sweetens a little. I have no experience with grapes, so I'll see what they taste like in a week. I have lots of figs this year. I LOVE figs from the tree.

Yes daddykirbs, just as bnjrob stated. The buckets are used to reduce the the amount of dirt or pottting soil. By drilling the small holes in them your water is evenly distributed all the way down and throughout without drowning and washing your soil out.

Putting buckets inside the barrel reduces the space inside that would otherwise be taken up with a large amount of dirt - thus increasing the weight of the barrel significantly as well as increasing the cost for decent potting/garden soil which really isn't that necessary. If done correctly, the buckets will work as water-ers, so you can put water into the buckets and it will seep out more evenly throughout the barrel without drowning the plants higher in the barrel in order to get water to the plants lower in the barrel.
Got it! Thanks. I have two 55 gallon blue drums... I may have to try this one.

I just found ya'll!!

Hope it ain't too late to join the party! I have been hanging out on TheEasyGarden sister site because I am having so much fun in the garden thei year. I am so glad to find Texas gardeners. Only another Texan can understand our weird weather and it's devastating effects on the garden, or how the weather surprises us by behaving so we get overloaded on produce. I will post pics later, been sitting up reading all the pages. Whoo-Hoo!

look forward to seeing your pics. Thanks for Theeasygarden tip!

Pics of my garden. It is in the front yard between the sidewalk and driveway because the back yard is too shaded.

This is our grand daughter and our "helper" with the potato harvest. Digging potatoes with a 5 year old is a blast!

This is our green beans. The seed came from Baker Creek and it is Thailand #3. We can't eat it or give it away fast enough!

My first year to grow sweet potatoes. Started with 2 store bought sweet potatoes that sprouted, now have 3 beds planted!

The squash bed. We got 4-10 squash every other day. The joke around here was, "What's for supper? wait for it..........SQUASH!!" The vines grew out into the yard 6 feet and finally died. Have replanted zuchinni that is just now peeking out of the soil. Gotta make some more zuchinni cobblers! YUM!

Welcome to the thread Baymule!

My 1 bloom on my pomegranate didn't make it. It put on 1 more bloom last week. For now I have 1 pomegranate.

I've made made about 35 quarts of dill pickles. Gave another 10 quarts of cucumbers to a neighbor. Then the chickens have ate their fair share.

Only 4 quarts of tomato juice. Chickens and squirrels eat and ruin more than I get.

Coons came in and had a feast on the sweet corn.

I'm keeping the animals fed.

I grew some cantalope this spring and left the vines to die. Well they didn't and guess what? I'm getting cantalopes again! Love this rain we've been having!
