It's funny how some things are fine with people and other people just freak out when they hear how you do things - like your mixed brooder. Yesterday I had someone who I'm sure was about to have a heart attack when they found out I didn't wash eggs. They said they always washed their eggs and wanted to know if I would wash them if they were dirty. Told her only if the eggs looked like they had been used for a hockey puck with a pile of manure as a playing field. I could just picture her cringing at my reply.

Isn't it, though? As for not washing the eggs...I'm all for that. But, yeah - my sister? She'd probably scrunch up her nose and go, "Ewwwww."

What exactly are those Cabinet things? No reference in the picture if they are refrigerator sized or mini fridge

There was this:

My apologies for it not being clear. I sometimes expect people to extrapolate where I shouldn't.

Those are industrial sized incubators. They run about $5k a pop on the particular add I was looking at - which, given that they can hatch out roughly 450+ ostrich eggs at one go .....well, yeah.

yuppers.. commercial incubator and hatcher.. If they did work you would probably need to hire an electrician to wire them in.. and I dunno if it said in the ad or not.. but they are probably run by computer program... I didn't notice any controls on them anyway.. (though I didn't blow up the pic either.. lol)

Oh, according to the advert, they are in perfect working condition. I saw what looked like a computer terminal in one of the photos, so I do not doubt that you are correct in that they are computer controlled. $5k each is a steal for these monsters; but.....yeah....They'd take up my whole living room and I'd be down one husband. I need him to stick around to finish my coops! **ducks and runs as he reads this over my shoulder** I'm in trouble!!!

Yinepu, thank you. I needed the outside opinion on this one to double check.

Maybe I will get lucky when they are older and they will go from being a pair to parents. That would be really great to see ducklings hatch from their mother's care. Now the fun part, listening to the drake to see what his name is. Every animal I have had will tell us their name in one form or fashion. I knew Gabby's as soon as she wouldn't stop talking lol. I like the sound of duck quack in with the chickens though.

Everyone have a good start to their morning, and a wonderful day. I am going to get some more unintentional tanning later today. I extended our garden/flower beds yesterday by another 5 feet abouts, dirt and all. Later today I will be doing some more planting and setting up spots for when I can transplant the ones in my seed starters next week.

Kilsharion, good luck with the incubator. I don't know much about them but have seen some similar to the pic you posted on eBay. I couldn't tell you how much they were going for as I can't remember now.

Anyone looking for an incubator? Saw this one on CL

http://collegestation.craigslist.org/grd/3724340311.html

lol.. I wonder if they are working properly...

I've gotten burned a few times buying stuff like that on craigslist.. even if they fired them up while you were standing there there's no guarantee they don't have issues.. (not trying to burst anyone's bubble.. I'm just a bit leary of things that look a little too good to be true)..

I wonder if the warranty is still good or if it will transfer to a new owner?.. never bought one new.. so I dunno

one other reason why I steer clear of the BIG bators.. lets say you have 100 eggs in one.. what do you do when it croaks or goes wonky mid incubation? (I've known several people this has happened to)

with a bunch of smaller bators I know I always have one that is working fine in case I am forced to stack eggs in an emergency!

np.. just listen to their voices and watch for a curled tail feather on the other one (just in case it's a late bloomer).. but otherwise I'm glad it's looking like you got lucky and have a pair!

Kili.. I still say you should make a coolerbator.. Mike would get to say he made another one (so no insulting him with a store bought one) and they are easy to stockpile parts for in case it dies or you decide you need a third bator!
