Aw, but at least you didn't go broke!

I just gave away my first chickens. Dang I am so nervous, but I know he and his wife have been wanting chickens for a long time. They are trading me 35 6x4 pallets for me to disassemble to build a bigger coop. So, let my three production reds go, one was roo and they wanted one rooster. I also let my three barred rocks go. I still have one barred rock though. I figure 5 laying birds and a rooster is a good sized starter flock.

BUT a bigger coop means I can have more chickens in the long run, but I miss my little reds, the rooster was the one I saved when I fell.

I found an after market humidity pump that I like. It has a thermo/hygrometer sensor, sponge paper with holder, and the tubing and pump. You can calibrate the temp/humidity for accuracy, which is something I've noticed not all sensors in incubators allow you to do. I like not having to have an open water tray and don't have to worry about the tray going dry or having to open up the incubator all the time to pour in more water. Even with the changing humidity levels in the house (going from high humid to little humidity when we ran the fireplace) and opening the incubator, it is keeping the humidity levels stable within a few points up/down of the settings It was about $80, but for me, it was worth the money.

That's perfect. Exactly what I was looking for. You, my dear BNJRob, are dah bomb!!

Curtis had some wonderful Cream Legbar eggs (two more than I paid for, even) for me and I also picked up four BCM eggs from him. Angie (Fowlrus) included 4 extra Muscovy eggs and 4 guinea eggs (gratis) for me. So, my haul home was 14 Muscovy, 8 Cream Legbar, 4 BCM and 4 coral blue guinea.

Consider I have 12 BR eggs here (in the bator, btw) and more eggs on the way:

4 (plus however many are laid between now and Monday because the breeder failed to ship them on time) Isbar
3+ Isbar (different breeder)
3+ Cream Legbar
6+ Cream Legbar (different breeder)
6 (plus however many are laid between now and Monday because the breeder failed to ship them on time - different breeder) Red Dorkings.

I think I'm going to be very full...cripes **does math real quick**

48 or so eggs can fit in the incubator depending on size...

8+4+12+4+4+3+3+6+6 = 46...and add in the 4 guinea eggs (tiny)...That's 50 eggs..crap on a stick....let's hope I don't get too many on those pluses....or I may be buying yet another incubator...oh crap!! I just realized I still have a couple of outstanding bids on some eggs, too.....I hope those Muscovy are looking for some company....I think I'm going to be getting creative.

I don't know how that never crossed my mind before! How long should I quarantine for? Just a day or two or closer to a week? Luckily for me, I just found someone that I will be getting some bantam cochins from this next week! Haven't gotten to check with her to see what kind/colors she has, but im keeping my fingers crossed that she might have a frizzle :)

My DH saw how sad I was at the six babies gone. He came home with a surprise for me. 2 silver laced wyandotte pullets, 1 brown leghorn pullet, 2 rhode island red pullets, and 1 easter straight run. They are adorable!!!! His friend works at a feed store and he bought them all for 5 dollars!

Incubation time for diseases after exposure can be weeks. A month quarantine is a good idea.

Alrighty guys and gals!!

So if i put my 6 to 8 weekers in this cage....

And then put the cage w/ chickens in my coup for a week or so

That should give them time to acquaint, right? They are still a bit smaller than the rest but i think in snother week they will br comperable in size to some of the younger pullets that are in there now. Am i on the right track?

Just a side note...im using some old dressers or bed side tables as nesting boxes and the girls love them! They were missing some drawers so were pretty much useless otherwise!
I love the dresser idea!

I just got the new bator working. Just need to stain it. I had everything I needed on hand. The glass in the door is a piece of 3/8" thick tempered glass that I honestly can't remember where I got it from, The fan and heater is a hand dryer (like the ones in public bathrooms).that I had, (imagine that) the plywood was leftovers, the thermostat is a water heater thermostat that I had in an old cooler-bator. I didn't have to go to Home Depot for anything! It's holding temps perfectly without any insulation. It holds 138 eggs.

I went ahead and set some eggs tonight without staining it cause I couldn't wait. It probably won't ever get stained.
