I've read that Iowa Blues are good free range birds.  They are pretty to look at too.

I agree. I'd go with some barnyard birds or sex links.

Well everyone was accountes for in the run or coup for their noon time chill session! Id call that a successful first run.
They did just as inwas hoping and stuck to the little tree line that is next to their run. It about 20' to 50' wide strip of tree line that seperates section of fields. If they can do that...i think they will do alright.

Iowa blues are nice but i dont wanna really soend money on some birds that i plan on losing, if everything goes to plan then id love some in the yard, but we will see. Sex links are a dime a dzn and i can throw a roo with them and let em go!

I understand completely. I wouldn't want to lose something that cost a lot. I hope your experiment goes well. My birds sort of free range. They roam the yard and sometimes leave the fence

My number one concern is the dogs. Most are contained but the bostons can get through the fence...and in our case these had to have been inbred in the line somewhere cause they are dumb and i mean dumb! But i think if a good size roo flogged him once or twice he would get the hint...

Can I get you guys help sexing some almost 4 week old baby chicks? I have a feeling I know who might be roo's already but hey, just wanna check and see if I might be wrong. Or do you guys think I should wait a few more weeks? There are two turken frizzle ee crosses(which I guess just makes them ee's? it was a frizzle turken project), two that are frizzle ee, and one that is either a ee that didn't get the dominant frizzle gene, or is a pure bred americauna, and then two heritage rhode island reds.

go ahead and post pics.. dunno if i will be on to see them.. but i am sure someone else can chime in with their opinions

Sick chicken help!!! This is my only layer. Amercauna, about 24-26 weeks old. Has been laying about 10 days. An egg every other day. Two days ago she was fine, yesterday seemed a little weak, but was moving around. This morning my husband went out and she is skin and bones, empty crop as well.

She is holding her head to the right, and is wanting to lay down and over on her right side. When laid on her left, she keeps her head chained to the right, and her right leg tucked under her.

We brought her inside. Syringe forced about 6-7ccs of water with electrolytes and probiotics. We use save-a-chick brand. After the water, she was more alert, and had a little more fight, but still very weak. Left food, layer crumbles, and a waterer, and have left her be for now.

Thoughts? Took these after giving her water. She's my favorite, and I really don't want to loose her.

skin and bones?.. sounds like she hasn't been eating
how is she today?.. any improvement?

They are fast but I think I could catch them with a trap. They are quick and can seriously fly but if I could chase them all into one of the coops, taming would go a lot faster. But first I need to clear out all the grass.

My husband can catch guineas... he managed to catch ours and they were playing keep-away like a pro

lol.. i swear I never knew he could run that fast.. plus his aim with a net is darn good!

my "to do" list is a mile long.. *sighs*.. but at least we're getting a ton done!

Yin, that's her this mornings. Two days ago killbone felt fine, today can really feel it. Haven't been home to check on her since we gave the water. I've seen her eat crumble, bugs, and scraps.

Thanks! We are really looking for it. Only drawback is I discovered I have a nasty allergy to ragweed. It's all over the property out there. I didn't even know it could cause a rash but it sure did. Looks like poison ivy, sort of, but it's on my neck!! The only thing that touched me there was the giant ragweed that we walked through. Itchy and sunburnt. Which is why I am at the old house trying to get it to calm down. I really hope this all works out. Once it is company suitable we will be inviting everyone over for a huge barbecue.

Oh no...I'm so sorry to hear about the allergy. Hopefully it will calm down quickly.

That's called Wry Neck. Get to the drugstore ASAP and get some Pedolyte or however you spell it, Anyway baby vitamins WITHOUT IRON. Use an eyedropper and pick her up, open the mouth, put the eyedropper to the very back of her mouth then squeeze it in there. That way you'll avoid having her suck it down the windpipe. In chickens, the windpipe comes into the mouth at the "front" and the esophagus in the "rear" of the mouth.

Do this once or twice a day for a couple days. She should recover like magic if it's not too late. AND: The stuff you're already giving her is great too! But add those vitamins. Wry neck is caused by a lack of a certain vitamin and for some reason one will have it yet none of the others do.
