Texas

As such, I haven't started a breeding project yet. (that and the lack of a reliable incubator) I'm sure it will be either Iowa Blues or Croad Langshans. Unless something I like better comes along. Iowa Blues are pretty cool birds. But the chance (however minuscule it is) of getting purple eggs is awfully tempting.

I have been reading on chicken breeding but I think I shall have to go through the book more to make sure I understand it better.

Yinepu, I swear I am going to get the pics of the skeletons soon. I even have them back in the bucket I had them in. I just keep forgetting to get to it.

One of my cats, Misty, has determines that she hates racoons and has attacked them numerous times. At most coming out with wet fur (not bloody). We have started locking her up because I don't want her getting sick from the racoons.

Yinepu I'd like in on the next class you set up for Caponing. I've butchered for years but I'm sure there are better ways to do it too. Never miss an opportunity to learn something new. I have practiced caponing on a few deaths and had scheduled this weekend to do 7 with my son but decided the heat and dehydration would be too stressful for everyone involved. (We are in Abilene and the temps are about 100)

The broodies seem to be taking the heat in stride, some spending time sitting beside the nests. The BR turkey is in broody heaven with her muscovy eggs. Gotta wonder what she'll think of the kids?

From my experience with showing dogs people also pay a whole lot of attention to the males and forget about the females contribution to breed standards. I dont think chicken individual bird line are followed closely as dog breeders would but the closer in relation the animals are, the more you are limiting the line on both excellent and 'other' traits.

One of the reasons people pay so much attention to the male of course is because the males are likely to contribute to the genetic of a larger number of offspring. That being said every breeding should be a balance of what sire and dam have to offer. I've been showing dogs for 20+ years have bred a couple litters when I felt I had something to contribute. Oddly most prospective new owners first or second, after sex is color. I bred and showed Guinea Pigs for many years as well, thats a real genetics game.
Chicken genetics is SO much more complicated than anything I've ever even tried. This is great stuff. I'll probably only breed for my own Rainbow egg basket business and local sale, but it's still fun.

Okay I have 2 cuter than cute things to share!

First for the chicken lovers (since this is a chick thread, LOL). Here is my lone Serama chick with a 2 week old Buff Rock. Took it from my other group to give the Serama a friend for a few days.

Next is my daughter, she made up her own "game", my piece is the pink pen, LOL!

Here is the "dice" she made

And another baby Serama chick pic to finish out
