When I looked at the picture of Gypsy I noticed that the comb was bumpy, that happens on the male chicks when their combs start growing. Also males have wider combs than pullets.

The other chick has has a red comb since a very young age.

Another thing is males have longer and thick legs, their feet are also larger.
Beautiful!! ok so legs and combs.. I can see what you mean about the width of the comb.. legs, think I need more experience to notice the difference. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful babies and helping me understand! So are those combs called "pea" or am I off on that too? And will gypsy's always be black? Do they look GLW? or is that off too? Am I looking for the same things in the other breeds or are they all different? Think I should have picked one breed and stuck with it instead of saying.. I will take two of each.. lol My brain is in overload mode! We love them the same.. just gotta figure out the best way to build for them! (We are using an old shed and adding more windows and a run.. it's about 200sqt-300 foot divided in the middle.. but we wanted to keep the other side chicken proof) and I def want to get enough eggs so I don't have to buy them for my large family and although we LOVE raising these from babies, I am having terrible luck with sexing them.. still questioning if I have 5 roos.. I really don't want to have to buy laying hens so hopefully I will get this figured out. Any other animal, I have no issues.. why on earth can't I grasp this in chickens!

legs, think I need more experience to notice the difference. - it is easier to tell the difference when there is a cockerel next to a pullet to compare. You will develop an eye to see the difference in size. I can start seeing the difference in leg size at about 7 days and on some males I can see it as soon as they hatch and kick that foot out of the shell. LOL

So are those combs called "pea" or am I off on that too? Wyandottes have rose combs.

And will gypsy's always be black? It will change to red when the bird matures.

Do they look GLW? or is that off too? They look like hatchery bred Wyandottes. Hatchery birds are not the same quality as some other Wyandottes you may see that are breeder or show birds.

Am I looking for the same things in the other breeds or are they all different? As far as sexing young birds, I look for the same things in other breeds also.

I will have some for sale after I cull this years birds and my breeding birds.

Oh Thank you sooo much!!! Think I am off to eye ball the older birds and see if I can figure this out.. lol Anything special to watch for or look at with the feathers or tails?

How old are your babies, simple life? Im sure you saif but must have missed it in the convo

They were 4 weeks on the 4th.. I know, everyone says it's "too early" but.. I have a coop to build! lol We have our landlord's chickens right here close to the house.. he lives a few towns over and saw them on the weekends.. we watch over them during the week (before he left anyway).. Before we moved here in April, I never even LIKED chickens! Within a week of getting to know his, we were in love.. then we got to "chicken sit" for 2 months and even the roos are eating out of our hands!.. When we moved, there was only a couple mature birds.. so we have been watching the teens grow (3 just started showing that they are def roos, 1 just started laying this week and the other two are about 3-4 months old) I am learning a ton but I can see like everything else.. there is a TON to learn! However, it seems there is good info and bad info to learn out there and it's rather hard for a newbie to sort through and figure out what is what! lol

I will pm you after the hatch, I'm hoping for at least 12 out of 18! And that's about 11 more than my husband wants me to have, lol ;). Still trying to get him to understand chicken math!

My goal is to have 2-3 of each : OE,amercauna, EE,SLW, marans, and welsummers.

For my frizzled colored egg layer project. So far I have 1 EE and 1 Maran. Lol. But then I need just good layers for my personal egg use. So I have a SS, RIR, and a BR. But I need a few more.

My husband called me the crazy chicken lady today :(
