Welcome.

I knew I was bound to run into someone from my old 'stompin grounds'. lol I use to live in Lufkin, I still miss it every now and then.

I am glad to find this thread too, (even though I found it whilst desperately looking for someone to save my cockerals.)

I took some time and read thru/skimmed this thread and just enjoyed the conversations and comments. It seems like so many ppl on BYC are from up north somewheres, its nice to see so many ppl from Texas here on this thread.

I am looking forward to attending the chicken show at A&M in January and am just having fun with my chickens!

Once I sort out my abundance of cockerals, we will be back to chickenbliss. We had good laying last winter and used no heat or lights. The roost area is well ventilated, but also small so their body heat does a great job keeping them warm and I added tons of extra pine shavings when we had that hard freeze last Jan. I too also saw a drop in eggs during the worst heat of August.

This is our 2nd year having chickens, so I am still in my honeymoon phase- I love it!!!

I'm south of you in San Jacinto Co. My egg production went from more than a dozen a day, down to 2 a day when it got really hot. I learned after the fact that they were likely going through a 9 month mini-molt at about the same time it got really hot - so that didn't help.

I started really beefing up their feed with calf manna for extra protein and nutrients, and i got them back up to 10-12 a day for the rest of the summer.

I had 17 adult layers this summer.

I think i used one cup of calf manna to each 2 quarts of regular feed - or something to that effect. The bag gives a recommendation for percentage of feed, and i attempted to follow that - or at least use it as a guideline.

I have yet to have adults during the winter months, so i am waiting to see how that goes. So far, the cooler temperatures are wonderful for my egg numbers.
