Poor Blue got hit by a car this morning, broke his three vertebrate(sp?) in his back by his tail, shattered his tail head. He has a hairline fracture in his femur but is estimated to a full recovery. Thankfully, he is still full of cartilage and no growth plates were harmed. There was no major nerve damage and he escaped without internal bleeding. He's going to be crate bound for a few weeks, and will have to be walked with a towel when it's potty time. Poor boy is miserable and being distand unless he wants something. He was chasing a coyote and, as the man said, came out of nowhere. According to my neighbors who witnessed it (I was on the otherside of the house trying to make sure no birds were taken) the guy who hit Blue didn't even try to avoid him and never slowed down. When he did finally stop he came hauling butt back in reverse and commensed to ussing me out for my dogs being loose.
Same guy who lives two miles down yet his dogs always show up in my yard chasing my chickens and horses. No more will he get courtesy alls when they show up. Not because he hit Blue, but because he jumped out of his truck and cussed me out because HE hit MY dog and it wasted his time having to see if he was allright. I bet he wouldn't have stopped if I hadn't have run around the corner waving and screaming.
On the bright side? Blue will survive. He will be normal again if we can keep him still, and my fence got patched and is once more ticking nice and hot. My fault, yes, for him getting out but the guy did NOT have the right to cuss me out. Though, at least he stopped...
-Also, I just add tin to the exposed sides of my coop to knock down wind and add a heat lamp if they're looking terribly cold in the winter, Kim. I leave ventilation, but my coop is 15x30 so I'm not sure on a 3x3...
ETA: Blue was the only dog out at this time, and I only let him go because of the coyote. When they are out they're right with us or they go inside if were working in the yard and not watching close.
