Basically you take all those gardening books and magazines you read and chunk them in the trash... cause almost all of them deal with weather and conditions that don't exist where you are now. Then look up gardening for where you really are on google. Or something.
Ok.. I am really laughing now! Only gardening book I own is on companion planting. I have had a garden for 20 years now.. these last two years (didn't have one the first yr here) have been by far the worst! Was looking on the Texas A&M site and well.. umm.. we had a freeze in May! So I waited.. which I guess I waited too long.. hahaa.. then it rained out my seeds so I planted again.. then the heat/drought started. Think I might have to buy some wall-o-waters just in case that happens next year! Now cold, I can grow in.. LOL It's this hot hot dry stuff that just ggrrrs me! Had no problems gardening in Wyo or even in MT at 6,000 ft elevation! WHY can't I figure out this heat thing!

Is it too late to put in a fall garden? Did I miss that too? LOL
LOL. Welcome to Texas gardening! A&M is helpful but much of the data on their website is old. As in, my mother the master gardener followed exactly the same recommendations more than 20 years ago. As for the fall garden, yep, it's time. I think. Depends...

Nooooo goats, but that's funny!
Never, say 'NEVER'!!!
This is my 3rd year here.. moved from Wyo.. I STILL can't figure out growing anything here! It's crazy!
Same here. We moved from Indiana (beautiful black soil....sigh) and I am doing a little bit better on gardening. Nothing like what I grew in Indiana. Right now it looks like my fall garden did better than the spring garden. Master gardeners are okay, but I don't trust them completely. We went to one of their tree sales and over half of the trees we bought died. (They assured us they were fail-proof!!!

On another note, we didn't get any rain yesterday. Just a light misting. :( Also my flock is going to be mad at me. We've had a HUGE hawk flying around the last two days. I am going to keep them in their pen for a few days.

Lisa :)

Your tree experience reminds me of a story I heard years ago about an old fella that sold trees and he'd give the new owners colored water in bottles with the trees. He'd tell them it was great stuff and to use like 2 drops of the orange with X amount of water every day the first few weeks then a few drops of the green with a lesser amount of water for the next month or so and they'd grow like crazy. So he got them to water the trees like crazy that way hahaha.

He had figured people out! Being newbies to this area we thought we would check out the tree sale. Never again. I do better buying my stuff from Lowe's or WalMart. At least I don't pay as much. We had lucked out last year. A couple of brothers were going out of business with their Oak trees. We just had to pay $10 a piece to have them dig them up and load them on our trailer. They were over 10' tall. We bought 10 and so far have only lost 2.

Well yesterday it was teachers and today its master gardeners. Hmmmmmm. I don't think its those of us that are Master Gardeners that are angry. I worked hard for the knowledge I have and love helping others with gardens and plants. I do color outside the lines. Always trying something that shouldn't work just to see. Sometimes its good sometimes its a fail.

I have nothing against Master Gardeners, as I said my mother was one, and very very knowledgeable about gardening and plants. She too was innovative. I was just commenting on the age of the data on the A&M website. Years ago it was cutting edge but it hasn't been updated since as far as I've seen when it comes to recommended varieties, etc. I have met those that seem angry but I think a jerk is just a jerk no matter their title and write it off to that.

PS - if you live in the Houston area, there is an EXCELLENT book on gardening by Bob Randall called "Year Round Vegetables, Fruits and Flowers For Metro Houston." Which I now have to toss out - LOL not really I'm going to give it to my son who is now gardening close to Tomball.

I enjoy talking to the Master Gardeners in my area. They are the first people I talk to before planting. You listen, digest, and then take the information along with what you know and go for it. In Indiana, they knew me by sight. (They were County Extension agents, not MG).

I believe we are talking generalities and not hitting any one individual. Now if you want to talk about someone, what is this deal with engineers?!!!! Everything is black and white. No gray areas. (My dh is an engineer)

You better sell it to him. I just checked the book out on Amazon and they want $79 for a used copy!! There were only 2 comments, but both highly recommended it.

haha My daughter is an engineer too. Everything is black and white and if you want a simple, to the point answer you better ask someone else lol. Cause she'll give you every detail you never wanted to know on the subject.
