I really don't want to burst your bubble on the JGs, but I personally have not been impressed with them. Now, we were given our bunch as mature birds (a friend of a friend was moving and had to re-home their flock), so I have no idea where they came from originally. Our main rooster, Reuben, is a JG and I adore him. He is wonderful as a flock leader. Very gentleman-like and absolutely beautiful. But I have had a horrible time with the girls... Mine are very flight, not consistent layers (at least not this year, and they are just now 2 yrs old), and they tend to develop more bald spots that any of the others. Maybe yours will be of better stock than mine.... I really hope you have better luck than I have had!
Thanks! We just want bigger birds, we were disappointed in the size of the RIR and New Hampshires. If the JGs don't work out then we will try NNs. We just want them a little bigger than they are currently. If he only has 5 or 6 I may get a couple cuckoo marans and polish tophats too. I am spoiled and DH rarely says no if I ask REALLY nice.

My two on crime going down....we don't count the statistics the same as we once did. For instance, a neighborhood has 4 vehicle broken into all in the same time period. Is that ONE crime or FOUR crimes? Well, we used to count it as four crimes, now it is "ONE crime incident" and filed under one case #. That's based on my 22+ years LE experience...most of it in Investigations. Not all agencies are the same, but those statistics sure look good at election time...

Okay, back out to my hoop coop. I can't get the dang cover to work and it's P'ing me off!

I guess I'll just finish putting the hardware cloth on and worry about the cover later.

.....it's hot.

Haha! Gotta love those sweet, yes-saying husbands!

I got my first marans this year. We started with a mix of 7 blues and wheatens earlier in the Spring and have 10 cuckoos in the brooder right now. I HAVE been impressed with these birds. I think they may be my new favorites, but I am going to reserve my final opinion until they start laying. My older group is getting close!!!. :)

Ugh, its nasty out there! One of my Yankee friends was asking about fall, and I said," What is this Fall that you speak of?" Really does anyone know? Is it that 2 weeks before winter when it isn't freezing cold or furnace hot?

Sweet! Then I will definitely be talking him into it. Yep its nice to know that DH likes to keep Momma happy. And more chickens makes Momma very happy indeed!!

Oh, I know I'm biased, but I ADORE my jersey giants!
The eggs are so big! And I love looking out and seeing them
free range with that beetle sheen to their black feathers.
It has been my experience that the Roos are very mild mannered.
Good thing as I would hate to be fighting one of these big guys off with a stick!
I haven't had any problems with bald spots, other than the rigors of breeding season.
I am getting ready to put saddles on my girls to ensure they stay intact
This fall. I do feed lots of protein, however. So my feed bill is probably higher.
I really do enjoy them.

I fell in love with all the pictures of them, they are SO pretty. And the chicks are darling too. And once I get it in my mind to get something then I want it and there is no changing it! Do you enjoy your turkeys Diane? DH and I want to branch out to do turkeys and quail next year. Have to give DH a break from building coops and runs! Poor guy.

Ha! Yep, I think you can focus on something other than size now! Too funny. :)

And like I said, it may just be the bunch I inherited... Their eggs aren't as large as my BR's and the bald spots aren't from breeding - they pop up on the heads and necks. I do think I had an issue with mites at one point, but whereas all my other breeds (and I have a variety) are fully feathered, the JGs just do not feather back in like the others... Now, if you like broodies, I have one JG that will go broody if you even mention the word "golf ball"...

Yes, I had a Brody like that this year too!
Maybe it was the terrible heat and they thought it was the end of the world and they needed to repopulate it! LOL
Yes, I really do enjoy my turkeys too. We've had red bourbons and royal palms in the past.
I have a turkey hen sitting on eggs right now. Nothing shy about them here. This year I've tried to change everything over to Rio Grandes. They are bigger birds and I like the multi colored sheen to their feathers. They follow us around like dogs!
