Texas

I haven't been around much the past couple of months -- was a busy summer.... BUT ... one of our chicks (girls) FINALLY STARTED LAYING!!!.... Not regular yet, but I've gotten two minty-sage green eggs in the past 72 hours.

Just waiting on the rest of my girls to catch up and start laying!!!!

Congrats!

I am not breeding specifically right now so everyone is in general population. I just went to gather eggs and one of my son's hatchery dutch bantams came out from under the porch with TWO BABIES!!!! How did that happen? Never mind I know LOL. I can't believe she slid this by me and now won't confess who the daddy is. We don't have a dutch bantam roo so even if she was quality (she is not) they are mutts.
How cute!!!!!

I have 8 or 10 raised beds and 24x36 in-ground garden. I plant my corn and melons in the ground.

Well, I will continue to garden, I'm just disappointed. Maybe I used too much chicken manure....great leaves, no fruit.

I also love feeding grubs to the chickens. I had one that used to hang out just waiting if she saw me digging in the garden.

Aw, new babies are so cute!! New layers are so exciting!!

I had been saving some sage-y green eggs thinking I would try to hatch, but it's too late in the year for me. I just put the month olds out in the new hoop coop and if it's true we are in for a cold winter, then I don't want to have to heat babies. So, now the chicken embryos will be transformed into an Angel Food cake....

....please tell me you get the humor in that....

:D

o/ I do!
I have a couple of avid gardener chickens like your girl. The see me digging or scratching in the soil and they just must help. And oh what help...
But really? I was digging the other day and the girls hadn't been let out. I found myself missing the "help" and let them out just so we could bug hunt. It's fun!

Apparently, as a sweet potato grower...I grow great VINES! I just dug up about 4 plants and there is NOTHING under them. One other plant had a baby sweet potato that would fill 1/2 cup. I babied these freaking plants all through the drought for THIS???? I was expecting 50 POUNDS of sweet potatoes from my 12 plants.

My corn TANKED even with two plantings, my summer squash DIED, my spaghetti squash is still alive but has not produced anything...even a baby squash, my pumpkins didn't even come up, my tomatoes barely produced considering I had TWENTY-FIVE plants...I give up.

Yes, I have peppers of all colors coming out my ears...YES, I had four descent sized watermelons that were pretty sweet and YES my okra is doing well and I had a few cuc's.

..okay, so I also got good exercise and was able to work out in the heat longer than my husband who is in great shape and me...not so much. And I did enjoy feeding the few hornworms to the chickens...and I like feeling the accomplishment of carrying on a homesteading tradition.

Dang. YES I WILL PLANT AGAIN!

DON'T GIVE UP TAMMY!

Our garden didn't do well either and I watered every day! I have my fall garden in. I am hoping it will do better. I planted pinto beans, radishes, lettuce, spinach, jalapenos, bell pepper, cukes, and yellow squash.

Lisa :)

My aunt had a warm blood live into his 40's or so she was told! Lol the guy who owned him before could have got the age wrong :D

they can live into the 30's if they're teeth have been taken care of during their lifetime, my old Palomino that we had from birth when I was 10 years old until he died at 30 :(
He was my playday horse growing up

Getting hurt is part of life unless we want to live in a padded room, lol. I have had 13 concussions from my jockey career

Ever hear the old saying, "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen?" Well I got out of the kitchen. Evidently I can take a huge *** kicking 20 years later bad beating at a bar from someone that tried to cow me (and never did) but a softball did me in. We make our choices as far as the battles we're willing to fight. A ball game wasn't worth it. Being a jockey would have been.

LOL both of you make me laugh, I won't even raft because I am scared of getting hit in the face. I thing that is my biggest fear, I can handle getting hit anywhere on my body, but anything that may hit my face, i back off 100%! No I don't have a pretty face to protect :lau , just my biggest fear, give me spiders, snakes, rats, any day, just don't hit me in the face!

I don't like getting hit in the face either but have been by horses heads more times then I can count :sick concussions, busted lips, black eyes, you name it :duc
galanie a bar fight

Hurricane Ingrid sure is dropping rain on us! I had to move our fancy chicks (Sultans, Frizzles, and one I-don't-know-what-this-is) from their open air grow out coop to the rabbit cage inside main chicken coop. There is more protection from the elements there.

The turkeys sure didn't seen to care. They just followed me and boo-beeped at me until I could feed them. Then the chickens tried to invade (even though they already had food) and I had to put the fear of God in them by "MNYAHHHH"ing at them until they learned that sound meant to back off. The turkeys just settled into their food, the little fatties.

In other words, I'm covered in mud, I got bitten by loads of mosquitoes, and my Sultans still hate me. Now to make some honey cornbread. Sigh.
