GOOD MORNING FELLOW TEXANS!!

Good morning.

Last night, I went and checked the six week olds and instead of being in the coop, snuggled into the shavings, they were heaped in the corner of the open area! I even have a light on in the coop portion so they can find their way in after dark. Stupid chickies.

Edited: I just checked on them and it appears they stayed inside after I shoo'd them back in. It also looks like the hub's mowed down my stand of wild portulaca (purslane). I was able to salvage a handfull and it will grow back but I'm trying to teach the babies to eat it since my older birds won't touch it.

Don't feel bad Tammy. It took Ken and I a good month to get the 4 Musketeers used to going into the coop and not on top. I don't know about you, but in a way I felt guilty moving them in. I don't like being penned in either.

Lisa :)

Ours would roost right on top of the closed in brooders we used with the first set.....I had to move them out of the pens entirely before they would go roost under the shelter. I basically had to give them no other options. Creatures of habit is an understatement when it comes to chickens.
It seems you may have to keep going and shooing em in til they finally get it. Chickens are even more hardheaded than men

Yep, but until we can teach them how to shoot derringers at predators, penning em is a necessity, at least around here!

Couldn't you just see a rooster holding a pistol with his little cowboy hat and belt with holster. OMG how cute!

Ugh, I need to go through Kayleigh's toys and rearrange my knick knacks. I found my grandmothers little farmer boy with chicks and a little Leghorn roo. They are pretty old, and I am trying to figure on a safe place where they will still be seen.

Thanks for mentioning purslane. I had no idea it was such a healthy weed! I love it when people here share information of what is edible and how to prepare it. I grew up in the city, so unless it comes from a grocery store, it is considered poison until I find out otherwise. The other day my chickens found prickly pears and loved them. I would never have thought to offer them to them.
