9:00 am and it's 54 degrees! I really need to get that furnace lit. Brrrr. It makes me laugh to think only two days ago I was sweating my tush off out there and now I think it's cold enough to want to just cook and sit inside watching movies.

I would love to see your pictures. I have two Sultan/polish crosses. They are so interesting looking. I wish the foot feathering would have come out heavier though.

ok what you guys n gals think?
DW and I think BCM possibly? more than likely a mutt... looks yummy tho!

I do not know what breeds he is, but I can say he has nice wide tail feathers, wide back, and round chest from what I can see in your pictures. He must come from from well conformed birds...and in the other pictures he has a good wide stance.

Good afternoon, my peeps! This morning was interesting, to say the least. I found out that one of my hens got injured (I think one of my dogs pulled her leg while she was trying to eat their dog food) and I saw her laying out underneath a tree. I got worried, but I don't think it was warranted because as soon as I came up to her, she hopped on up and started hopping around on one leg.

Does that happen a lot? She's a big, heavy Naked Neck hen but she's hopping around on that leg with no trouble. She's a little slower and has to lay down every once in awhile to rest her leg, but she seems fine otherwise. Maybe it's just because she's a tough hen with a lot of spunk (she's one of my alpha hens). Of course, because of her injury, I gave her a tasty treat of atole de arroz, which she happily munched on while I fed the flock.

As it turns out, my newly incorporated Frizzles/Sultans/I-Don't-Know-What-The-Heck-You-Are chicks are all doing really well with the flock. All the black frizzles seem pretty social while the white and brown ones don't like being held. And those Sultans/I-Don't-Know chicks refuse to be caught.

The sun's out again, though, so I went out to weed some more and saw that a bunch of little weeds popped up again.

So I'll be spending loads of time outside in the early mornings, trying to eradicate weeds without using any herbicides. Needless to say, this might take awhile.

Oops, so sorry Heidi.

On my first year with chicken, i put my hand into the nest to double check the date I wrote on the egg. The setting hen bit my hand and ended up bitting the egg, causing a hole on the shell. I left back to the nest and it hatched later.

Since that incident, I use caution so the hen can't bite the egg. If I have to put my hand into the eggs, I always use 2 hands. One to cover her face, distracting her view while the other reaching for the eggs. I rarely do that since this can cause egg breakage so when I have to swap the eggs from 1 nest to another, I always try to do this at night.

Recently I have 2 hens setting and none hatched (maybe eggs was taken by rats). So I took 8 eggs from another nest to put under these 2 hens, four eggs to each hen and they continued to set. I decide to use both hens, since 1 may walk out later on and I will have the second back up hen to switch the eggs to. 12 more days to see the result.
