Texas

Howdy, fellow Texans!

I am currently living in downtown Houston. My family is in the process of moving into a more rural area outside the city, but we're still in the house hunting phase at the time being. One of my first projects upon moving into the new home is going to be building an outdoor aviary for Ringneck Doves. That's my own personal project, but my family has expressed interest in raising backyard chickens as well. Right now we have three cats and a Belgian Mal mix rescue.

I wish we were experiencing this lovely fall weather y'all are talking about! The weather here has been so sporadic. We'll have a nice breezy day, and then it's right back to 95 degrees and high humidity.

Welcome! I'm in Conroe, about 1 hour North of Houston. Lots of rural land up here, plus the weather is just a bit more "Fallish" than what you're getting right now. I've lived in Houston, too, and much prefer it up here; come house hunt up in Conroe!

Love your avatar! We're having a beautiful crisp fall day in College Station. There's still lots of land on the outskirts of Bryan/College Station. I think we're still considered a best-buy area.

from Rosenberg, TX!! Where are you looking for homes? We are located SW of Houston. Lots of country here.

Lisa :)

Rosenburg is a beautiful area! None of us want to commute more than 30 miles, and Rosenberg is right at that 30 mile line, but I would personally love living out there.

We were actually looking at some houses in Stafford the other day, which is an ideal location for us. If I had it my way, though, we'd live waaay out in the country, haha. :D

I don't imagine my family's work situation would allow us to live in College Station, but I love how remote it feels to the downtown area, Kingwood, etc... it seems so peaceful out there compared to areas I've lived.

I have family who lives near there! My sister is in the Woodlands, but she teaches high school in Conroe. It's a nice place! I will definitely keep that in mind. I've heard that there are parts of Conroe that get pretty scary, though. But that was also coming from someone who lives in the suburbs... they'd probably think where I live is scary, too!

My daughter is in med school at UTMB Galveston, so I come down a few times a year.  We are here to celebrate mine and her birthday.  She is my first born and she was born on my birthday.  It was one of the happiest and most fearful days of my life.  I had to make the toughest choice of my life, to save my wife's life or fight for my babies life and risk losing them both.  It is quite an amazing story, but I obviously decided to fight for her life.  It took every ounce of strength in my body to get her out, but she was so worth it.  She is very special to me .  She is doing rotations in the OBGYN right now.  This is what she posted on facebook on our birthday.

"Dad and Mom, after spending time with moms in labor on my OBGYN rotation, I've been sharing with a lot of people how awesome you two as parents were when I was being born! Your love and faith made you take the risk of having me out there in the Amazon...and on your birthday, Dad! Love you and so grateful for your strength and trust in Christ! Happy birthday to us, Dad!

I thought about bringing you one of my game roosters on this trip, but our plans got messed up and we got off way too late to have the extra time.  Maybe next time.

Wow! That's is amazing! You know how to get my emotions going! Lol touching story! Brought a tear as I have all girls and hope they will be as successful as my dreams are for them!
I would be honored to have one of your birds! But DW has me a list of birds to be rid of and they are all my roos!!! I get to fight for my boys! Lol I'll just pull the "I DON'T HAVE ANY SONS!!!! Let me have my sons!" lol then I'll just make myself cry like I used to do to my ssisters to get them to clean my room! Yea, that will work!

Southside is good. We often go to Meyer's which is smaller and a little further down Hwy 290. Southside has better chicken.

Anybody raise Black Soldier Flies?

A coworker and fellow chicken owner told me about BSF composters. It sounds very interesting! I read some people in the Feeding thread are harvesting 1000 a day. That sounds like a good protein source.

I just shovel them out of my composter. I have three different composters so I can maintain the mix of fresh vegetable and fruit scraps so I can get the larvae out relatively easily. I haven't gotten any compost for the garden, it's ended up on the lawn when the chickens scratch through it to get the soldier fly larvae. It sure would be nice to not have to go digging into the compost got get the bugs. I don't know how far into the winter I'll have larvae.
