My chickens have had dry pox...if that is the one that looks like fire ant bites. I think once they get it they are immune because I've never had a repeat. I've also not noticed it making them feel bad....but it is not pretty!

I have used DE in my nest boxes mixed with cedar shavings for years. Just a handful per box. I also sprinkle on the roost, under the roost, on the floor and on the chickens...again, small quantities....never had a problem with the chickens and I haven't had a mite problem since I've done this. Is this where I should mention that I also spray Skin-so-Soft here and there around the coop once a year for Mosquitos?

I heard that the Avon cream was great for that, but how do you spray it?! That's a brilliant idea!

Because of the open-air coop we have, the moisture in the coop is essentially the same outside, minus the grass. All I can do is never leave water in there (I don't), vaccinate younger birds (doing it), and pray none of my birds are suffering too much (I prayed while my rooster sat stop my head. I think God heard me :)

Laura - SSS is a thin oil. I put it in a suntan oil sprayer and if it's a bit thick I add small amounts of alcohol until thin enough to spray.

Edited: that is RUBBING alcohol..... Haha!

I guess the vodka I wanted to use won't work. I'd probably end up with a bunch of drink birds, hehe!

This sounds like a great idea, though! I have to look into it!

it also says not to use the vaccine unless there is an outbreak...I'm assuming it's pretty hard on the birds

Of all the avian pox threads and sites I've been looking at, I haven't read to not vaccinate unless there is an outbreak. It looks like it could continue for months if I don't vaccinate soon.

I make my own mosquito spray (for me :) ) using essential oils with a 100 proof vodka base :celebrate I would think vodka would be better then rubbing alcohol :old

New questions (should I start a thread on my plans or is it ok to do this here?)....

I read that making a coop from old shipping pallets was a good way to save money.  Good idea?

This is what this forum is for: asking questions, answering questions, just visiting, :frow
We find free pallets everywhere, McCoys, 87 Lumber...........This is our last coop built entirely from free materials. The base frame is from those long pallets.
