Thanks for the link. :)

I have the book Fresh Eggs Daily, Raising Happy, Healthy Chickens...Naturally and she talked about landscaping the run for happier chickens and neighbours. Sound like a good idea to me so I started looking into it. She had a small list of plants in the book that were good, but she is in TN I think and not all will do well in the DFW area.

I'm going to look into grapes. I know they grow here. Thanks for that idea Tammy.

I have one redbud tree that is really close to the run area. Are the seed pods ok for chickens? All the other trees that will provide shade won't be anything to worry about.

Edit:
Did you see kale is on that list? I thought I read on here people fed that to their chickens. I've read other places that it was bad for them too.
Oh, mine also love the mesquite trees. They make nice hiding spots and they attract walking sticks which the chickens and ducks gobble like chickie french fries.

And you can't kill those even if you try so I'm doubting chickens can do them much harm. And the beans make wondrous jelly and flour.

Everything I've read says kale is fine for them. I hope so I'm planting kale in my chickie gardens for them!

I'm in San Antonio & I too cannot stand this cold! I felt so sorry for my 4 month old hens that I put a heating pad & a flood light in their coop to keep them warm. I was so relieved to see 1 hen on the roost under the light & the other 2 snuggled together on the heating pad! The 4th chicken got sick

, she was wheezing & sneezing so bad I was afraid I was going to lose her. I brought her inside & for 2 days she wasn't getting any better. I did a search of the forums and discovered the miracle drug Tylan 50. I ran out and bought some, gave her an injection and the next day she was so much better.

She got her second injection this evening and is well on the road to recovery. So, if any of yours should get sick from the cold, just start them on Tylan 50, you & the chickens will feel so much better! Good Luck

Hey welcome to BYC! I am in the NW side of the city. I have Jersey Giants (4 months old), and while my coop is built more for our hot summer months, they seem to be tolerating this cold wet weather pretty good. They have actually been camping out under the back porch with the ducks and the dogs. It is sooo cool to seem them all keeping warm together out of the wind and rain. My back porch looks more like a stable! In any event, they all seem to be doing good. My Muscovy ducks actually seem to be loving this weather. The bad thing is they all stopped laying last week. I suppose it is best, so that they can conserve their energy. Keep warm and have a good thanksgiving!

I found a new sweet potato recipe to try. I was tired of the same old sweet potatoes with marshmallows on them. Since my kids are grown and I don't need to trick them to eat the sweet potatoes with the marshmallows anymore I decided to try this recipe. :) They are in the oven now. Boy do they smell good!

I have my pie made and a cranberry pineapple salad. One of my all time favourite jello salads.

I will take more pictures of the one in question later, but this bird is from the same group of hatchery EEs.
Awww! LOVE that face!!! There must have been some barring in their background.

You know those feathers look like my favorite EE'r named Mossy. Mossy was not a very nice color as a chick which is why I called her "Mossy". Yours has a really nice beard but mine does not. I thought Mossy may have been a male because of the rust color but it's all over and she hasn't developed saddle feathers...yet. :)

Beautiful birds! I can't wait to get mine in April. Lots to do before then. Wish I was handy with wood and a saw. I'm good with a hammer but that doesn't do much if you can't cut wood. lol! It is really best that I don't try either. I am rather attached to my fingers. Had the nickname Grace for a bit. Can you guess why? ;)

If these taste like they smell they are going to be really good!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I'm sure that the salesman is as happy as I am that the tractor was finally delivered. ...and now the hubs is out making love to it. :love He is going around looking for piles of dirt to pick up. I hate to see what he is going to do after the backhoe is installed!
:lau reminds me of my husband when he got his new "used" tractor with a our 1st front end loader He had me send this picture to everyone with the title: Man & his tractor-front end loader almost better then sex :ya
