Texas

Hello all. Been on the site for a little while now and just came across this thread so thought I would post. We just moved to the waxahachie area where we finally bought some land and are new to the whole chicken thing. We have 3 pullets (new hampshire red, barred plymouth rock and silver laced wyandotte) and 1 roo (speckled sussex) that are 15 weeks old and in their first molt. I am enjoying reading everyone's posts. This website has been my life saver and where I get most of my information. Love it here and y'all are so patient!

I think I'm just going to have to have 2 of each! They both sound like great birds.
If you don't mind me asking, where do you usually purchase from?? It's the one thing I can't seem to get..lol. Shipping seems like a popular option but it seems they do better in larger numbers and..I'm only wanting a few.
Thanks for your help!
I purchase from D&L Farm and Home in Denton, TX. I did drive to their Celina store this summer to pick up a newly hatched (yes, they hatch them at the store!) Cochin bantam for my broody Japanese bantam hen to raise! I love D&L, their knowledge, and selection of supplies as well as great selections of chickens throughout the year!

I have to admit I'm still in the early stages of all of this, lol, but I was looking at Easter Eggers and Buff Orpingtons.
Although, the later didn't necessarily show up on the heat hardy list...
If you have any suggestions, my ears are open!
Was planning on having 3-4, just for eggs. I do have kids though and, even though they wont be hands on much, I'm definitely looking for a breed more on the friendly side :)

I have had 4 Buff Orpingtons for over 3 years. They tolerate heat and cold very well. They are also very docile. I love this breed.

I really wish I had gotten buff orpingtons when we got our 4. Chicken math is already starting to get to me lol. But I really don't have the space to seclude new chickens away from my existing ones at this time. We got ours from a local chicken place in Terrell and she still has chickens from the same shipment and I so want to go get 2 more :(.

Ideal Poultry is located here in Texas and they don't have a minimum number of chicks, just a minimum dollar amount ($25). However, you'd have to wait till warmer weather if you didn't want to deal with "packing peanuts" (male chicks included in the order to keep small orders of chicks from getting too cold). There is also a Buy, Sale, Trade section on here where you could look. Or maybe someone on this thread may live near you who has the breeds you want.
I was looking at Ideal the other day. I'll see if I can narrow down they're location a bit, and I'll definitely be keeping an eye on the buy/sale trade, thanks!

Collin County Feed store on Chestnut (just east of The Square) will get chicks in starting the end of February or early March, depending on the weather. I don't know anything about the quality, but I know a few people who bought their chicks there.
I know where that's at! I work on the Square actually and live in the downtown area. Love it here!
I'll have to go in there and browse soon...

Thank you so much! I'll definitely be checking them out. Denton's not too bad of a drive at all! I don't think Celina is terrible either...
I really appreciate it!!

I really don't want to wait until March now, I'm too excited! lol
This may be a dumb question, and if so I'm sorry, but...does temperament with Orpingtons generally stay the same, regardless of coloring? Or are Buffs more docile than say, Chocolates or Lavenders?
