Texas

I was looking at Ideal the other day. I'll see if I can narrow down they're location a bit, and I'll definitely be keeping an eye on the buy/sale trade, thanks!

I know where that's at! I work on the Square actually and live in the downtown area. Love it here!
I'll have to go in there and browse soon...
This is too funny, I live in the Historic District. We are practically neighbors. :)

The feed store doesn't really have much by way of chicks right now. They do carry some really good feed for chicks and full grown hens. Almost organic type.

Omg, no way!
We are neighbors! lol
I figured there wouldn't be chicks just yet, but I might start picking up little things here and there, so its not all at once.
I'll be sure to check out the feed. I've been reading about people making their own...but I don't want to set unrealistic expectations just yet. I don't know how much of a Martha Stewart I can be...

I found some good deals on My Pet Chicken and even on Amazon.

I thought about mixing up my own feed but I don't have room to store all that stuff. The almost organic food sounds really good too.

Look into fermented feeding (Beekissed on here has a great article) and deep litter method for the coop.

I picked up a book I really like called Fresh Eggs Daily by Lisa Steele.

I can't wait to get my chickens and put into practice all the stuff I have learned. My old house is preventing that though this spring. :(

Aw :(
That's so funny...I'm on the Fresh Eggs Daily blog right now! I really like it. It was her recipe I was looking at. It just looks like so many components..I guess it wouldn't be terrible if I could make it routine. I don't have a lot of storage either though. Maybe it's an older house thing? Or just a teeny house thing..that may be my problem..

Luckily we have a small shed

Thank you so much! I'll definitely be checking them out. Denton's not too bad of a drive at all! I don't think Celina is terrible either...
I really appreciate it!!
Celina is really close to McKinney. I know they hatch on site. Denton gets large quantities. The Denton store keeps chicks pretty much year round. They have bantams (Silkies, Cochins, OEGB, and others) and tons of varieties of large breeds. -RIR, Barred Rock, Red and Black sex-links, Buff Orpingtons, Easter Eggers, Dominiques (from time to time), Faverolles, Golden Laced Wyandottes, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Black Australorps, Leghorns, and others. They also have guineas and several turkey breeds at different times through the year. (I kept tabs on when Buffs would be in stock and gave them my number when they were expecting them. They called me the day the Buffs arrived, and I picked the two I wanted. -day old little things!) I like being able to select the chicks after observing them a bit, and that's why I stay with the local stores.

See, that's how I am, or how I've been with my other animals. I don't know if getting them in the mail is the thing for me.
That's great they have such a variety! I can't wait to go look :)

Welcome everyone!! Must be the Christmas season bringing all these new folks out of the woodwork! I will say that before I got my chickens I was on this website all the time reading everything I could. It's a good place and the Texas forum is the best ever!
Yes welcome from Magnolia, TX to the newbies. The Texas thread has been very active and a source of good information. I have been following for a year now and there are excellent resources here and other threads on BYC.

I have to admit I'm still in the early stages of all of this, lol, but I was looking at Easter Eggers and Buff Orpingtons.
Although, the later didn't necessarily show up on the heat hardy list...
If you have any suggestions, my ears are open!
Was planning on having 3-4, just for eggs. I do have kids though and, even though they wont be hands on much, I'm definitely looking for a breed more on the friendly side :)
Easter Eggers & Production Reds have nice friendly personalities and they are good layers.

I've thought about ordering mine, but I think I would rather look at them and pick the ones I like. I know most of the places around here get their's from Ideal Poultry. I figure they are not as good as from a breeder, but just starting out they should be fine for me.

I did some more work on my coop today. Got part of the back and side walls up. I'm working on buying my wire. It's kinda pricey, so buy some every week or two so it doesn't hit me all at once.

I wish my coop was done and I could get my chicks this week. *sigh*
