I figured out a way (not much on the figuring out part) to get my coop sooner. I just need to buy a roll of wire every month or so until I have enough for my coop and run. The wood isn't all that expensive, especially if I can get pallets.
That is what I did. Every time I went to Atwoods, I would by a roll of hardware cloth. It doesn't hit the pocket book so hard if you do it in stages. That wire is expensive!

I read an article on hydroponics the other day. Wish I could remember where. They grew veggies on the surface and raised talapia in the water. I want to say it was a project to help out villages in Africa. It was very interesting.

Wouldn't this make a darling coop? All the glass could be mesh wire and the mower storage could be closed off for feed and straw and stuff. No skylights needed, or chimney either, unless it was a vent for letting heat out. The stone walls should help keep it cooler and warmer both.

I did my daily 1 mile walk at 10am. When heading South, it started to get colder, when head back facing North, I could feel the freezing 25 mile wind. Tomorrow we will be 27-39F. Then on Fri (Chinese New Year day) it will be 59-77F, just can't wait.

On Sunday I will go to Houston to see my Mom, have lunch with her, do a little card game for luck and maybe she will give me a red envelope with some money in there ( a way to wish me to grown up )

On the way, I will wave to Hens (Katy), Lisa Rosenberg) and a few more.
I will be waving back!! What road(s) will you take to get to Houston? Give your mom a hug for me!
Also, does anyone else have this nasty bug going around?! My entire family is sick! We are all cughing, feel like our heards are twice their normal size, drainage, stuffiness, dzziness, soreness, you-name-itness. You get the idea haha. It is horrid. I just want to crawl in a hole and die.

I just got over it.

Not fun at all. I had it for about 2 weeks. No energy. Hurry up and get well!

Lisa :)

Actually, they are resin statues. They measure 8 in. long and 9 in. tall. I found them at Wal-mart and just couldn't resist.

I got them to put in my raised garden bed. My beds are going to be out by the coop, so I thought they would look good there.

I'm a chicken nut anyway. I've had pics/statues in my kitchen for years. I don't know why it took me this long to get real ones. Yes I do, we've always had horses and I needed every available space for them, lol.

Have you looked on etsy for vintage (hate that word!) or antique miniatures? I got some really cute sets there. So I now collect chickens. Like I needed another thing to collect! I'll post a photo later....

Ahh...great minds think alike. :)

I take elderberry. Don't get sick.
My son caught something a few weeks ago. Just before Christmas, now that I think about it. He didn't start taking the elderberry in time, and was miserable for about 3 days. Then he had a bad cough for a couple (?) of weeks. He started taking elderberry so I think what he had wasn't as bad as it could have been. Poor thing was perched on the porcelain throne for a few hours though with a bucket. Not fun. I feel for those who catch this thing.

Post pics soon of the chicks. I would love to have some gold lace Wyandottes. I hope to be able to find chicks in the Spring when one of my girls go broody. I have always just put 2 chicks under my broody hen,(One time 3)but I think I will do 6 next time since I have more coop space.
I can't wait for Spring!!!!!!
:)

Your post gave me an idea!

These chicks were all looking a little exhausted and I didn't think they were drinking water or eating on their own, so I decided to try putting Mama with them.

Mama is our little bantam Cochin who, while very determined to hatch a chick last year, wasn't very good at protecting her baby out in the open. However, that little chick was otherwise healthy. So, I put Mama in the cage with the chicks and they started moving around!

Mostly, the chicks wanted to peck Mama until she paid attention, but afterwards, they all started drinking water and now two are eating all on their own!

I'm still watching her to make sure she doesn't do something stupid like kicking a chick up into the air while scratching for food. However, the starter has her distracted enough that she isn't paying too much attention to the babes. We'll see if she grows to like them just a but, haha!

Edit: Would anyone like to give me a guess at how old these chicks are? I forgot to ask, but I really did get worried when they didn't start eating right away. The main reason why I didn't panic is because I based their health on how fast they ran away when my hand came near, haha!

What a wonderful idea to add Mama. I hope it works out for everyone!

Do I see some real feathers coming out on their wings? They would be at least a week old, maybe two weeks then.
