already obsessed with the olympics, scheduling my weekend around when they are on! I fell today in my school parking lot as I was trotting to get out of the cold just a little quicker than if I was just walking like most old people should. Ugh just wiped out. I hurt everywhere. Like I was in a car accident.

Oooh! I saw a backyard flock on my way home, free ranging in their yard! I got all excited. Lol.
They're were some really beautiful Buff Orpingtons. ..I hope mine get that big and beautiful!

oh no! I hope you feel better!

Does anyone else cook their pork ribs in the oven? I bought a bunch when they were on sale at HEB, got home and realized I did not have an coals, so I read the instructions on the packet and did it in the oven, OMG, they are GREAT! Super juicy every time! Nothing beats on the pit, but this is a very close second and works great in the winter. Heats up your house with the stove and good food.

For anyone interested here it is:

Heat oven to 300
Rub the ribs with your normal seasonings
Cook meaty side up for 30 mins, flip
Cook bone side up for 25 mins
Pull out and put your sauce on
Flip to meaty side up again for 20 mins
Pull out and let rest for 5 mins

So far this has worked perfectly for 4 different sets, never over cooked or under cooked. The sauce normally gets nice and caramelized, if you want it more crisp I would put it at a high broil for the last few mins. Enjoy, just had this for dinner and thought I would share.

I'm glad you found them all. I would have been panicking. I don't handle losing things very well, especially if they are a living thing.

+1 and saw that you did share. Off for a day and man! what a lot to catch up on!

When you cut a mesquite tree it will grow back with multiple shoots if you don't treat the cut with something like Round-up or a stump killer.
Gald you didn't get hurt badly. Mesquite trees get thorns at some point too. So do bois d'arcs. I found that out the hard way after I had one cut down in my yard and despite all my efforts it tried to grow back. I was grabbing the shoots to remove them and surprise! thorns. :/
I had another scare this afternoon, haha! Indie was outside the fence so I had to go get her. It had been drizzling for about an hour, so everything was soaked. I brought her in and clipped one of her wings. I love watching her fly around but I don't think it's worth the fear of losing her. She's so beautiful and I really want to start a breeding program with her.

Yeah, I figured I'd have to use a stump killer...unless I dig the whole thing up. If it was on our land, I'd dig it up for sure. Oh well, might as well use stump killer. These aren't necessarily mesquites but they definitely look like them when they get bigger. The tree that fell down on our fence was rotted inside because it was weaker than a mesquite. It's still there, unfortunately, but we'll be getting it off the fence once the weather is more agreeable. Dad can't walk in the field because of his knees, so Tony and I have to do it ourselves.

I hope you get the land! I am so glad you didn't knock yourself out or get whacked by a thorn. We have mesquite all over the place here too. :(

Lisa :)
It might takes years, haha! This woman hasn't wanted to sell the land and I think all we're waiting for is the go-ahead from her sons. In fact, I'll probably be out of the house before that even happens. If I get stuck in an apartment after this, I'm not gonna be a happy camper, haha!

It hit me in the cheek, so I had a little cushion. It helps that I've got big hair, though, or it probably would have hurt more. We have mesquite around here, too, just not in our yard. We do have a thorny ebony tree, though. Trimming it is really dangerous and we always make sure to pick up all the trimmings. I like to burn it because the ebony fires are super hot. I bet I could stick a marshmallow in there for a second and it'd be perfect, hehe!

I hope you guys can get the land! That would be awesome~ Plant some corn there and let the chickens wander around, they might even get free snacks from the plants! That or more room for chicken coops >8D
I'm already planning the garden! I wanted to plant two different types of heirloom corn, but Dad says I'm not allowed to plant along the side of the house. I didn't want any cross-pollinating to happen, so I have to stick to only one type. It sucks. I was also going to plant sorghum, millet, alpine strawberries, three different types of huskberries, and some general salad veggies. I have to find a way to keep the chickens out once things start flowering though. Knowing them, they'd think everything was delicious and just eat the whole garden.

If we had the field, I'd probably be able to grow a large plot of yellow corn and a small plot of strawberry or indian corn. The trees and houses along the edges of the field would keep the pollen from other corn crops from reaching my corn and I'd be set! I'd be able to grow most of the chicken feed I'd need throughout the year. It's my dream to do that one day. For now, however, I can grow about four small rows of corn and other crops that will, hopefully, do well. I haven't a clue whether I have a green thumb or not, but I think I'm doing pretty good with composting! Let's see if this good fortune carries onto germinating seeds.

Falling really hurts when you aren't a kid anymore. That is why I am a bit worried to go back to riding horses. As a kid, I bounced really well. Not so anymore. Hope you are feeling better today.

I have done mine in the oven before. Love how they turn out. I did mine differently than you did yours, but I think I followed the package directions too. I use Durkee rub for seasoning. Excellent!

Okay...no progress on building the coop, because my chicks out-grew their rigged up brooder accomodations. Used 2 small dog crates but they were obviously too small. Now they have a 6.5ft x 4ft x 2ft Hotel. I have some Happy Happy Happy girls now!
