I've been putting off what I want to do for Valentine's Day for Mom, but I've realized how commercialized the holidays have become. So instead of buying roses or chocolates, I'm gonna do something different.

I'm gonna go to Lowe's and buy some dirt. Mama loves her some decent potting soil. Then, once I get that, I'm gonna go to La Feria and buy these pots that she's had her eye on but hasn't had the opportunity to buy.

And if I have enough time, I'll make sure the house is entirely clean by the time she gets home. She needs a stress free environment to make plans for her new pots and potting soil! :D

Wow, Laura, I need stress free environment too. Let's me first forward your idea to my sons. And then, when you have some time, we would like you to come spend your vacation visiting us too. For exchange, I can do the tune up for your Cowasaki.

Hahaha! That gave me the giggles. Make sure you schedule my visit for a birthday or holiday. I only do extensive cleaning for special occasions. I just wish I had a Cowasaki for you to tune up, hehe!

That is a much better gift than roses that die and chocolates that really do nothing for you other than taste good. I would take a gift like you are giving your mom over just about anything else.

Don't buy Miracle Grow soil. It frequently comes with dirt gnats in it.

Mama is diabetic, so she doesn't partake in chocolates very often. They have too much concentrated sugar in them and she can barely finish a bar, haha!

I'm gonna try and buy organic gardening soil (I don't trust Miracle Gro). My sister gets me a discount at Lowe's. If I can't find any, I'll use the tiller and get her some of our soil. It's organic, free, and she won't have to get it herself. She's been wanting to use ours to see if it'll work better for her plants. The chicken/horse/goat manure that has been dropped on it for years and was never touched makes our soil better than anything the store could sell. :D

Hehe, Mama isn't a traditional lady! She loves to be given things she can use. She and I are kinda alike. For my birthday, I asked for 100 lbs of feed and for hers, she asked for me to get her a unique lawn ornament.

My sister ended up buying a ceramic pig in a can of beans. Get it? :lau

Someone down the road from us in Leander builds and sells these for $500.
That's kinda cute!

I know we've all seen it but I compared one of my backyard eggs to a store bought egg.
Then the hens are busy! An egg a day each day this week, and today,BOTH laid eggs. One lays small lighter eggs while the other is larger and darker, both are the same age and breed.
Yum! It's crazy how different the eggs look (commercial vs homegrown)

I'm planning on building this coop with a large run area around it. Mine won't be cedar though. I need it to cost as little as possible.
I need a bigger one :/ But that's beautiful!

A simple one would be a TS dog run with tarp and 5 gal bucket nest boxes
I saw a hoop coop that seemed pretty easy and only cost 150-200 to build. But I don't know how adequate it'd be for winter..

Just for Hung....framed one of the sides of the Coop.

Looking good! You're giving me hope! lol

The only saw I own is one of those old style hand saws.

That's what I am trying for. :)

The chickens worth $5000 a pair? ;) Or maybe those that ugly ones that got posted the other that cost so much - the ones that look like a science experiment gone wrong.
Ugh those chickens.....lol. Respectfully, they creep me out a little...lol

How many hens are you planning to house? The ones for $200 to $350 will hold very few hens, maybe two. They say it will house more, but there really isn't enough room. I found the prefab chicken houses to be really poorly manufactured--just stapled together. I think a rat could tear them apart to get in.

I had three LF hens in a modified dog house that I bought at Tractor Supply for about $140. It is surprisingly well built. It has a floor space of about 45.5" x 31" x 32.5" high. It really is too cramped for three large fowl, but two are fine. It is only only temporary. I've since culled the excess cockerels, so have returned one of the hens to her regular housing. The two I've kept separately penned will hopefully be in good enough condition to show in two weeks. They are staying put, away from the cockerels.

I think it will be perfect to modify for breeding pens for the bantam Cochins. I want to put outside nest boxes on it.

Obviously, there isn't enough ventilation, but it is really cold right now so it isn't a problem and I was desperate to get those pullets away from the cockerels so I could get their feathers in order for the show. I have another little dog house, still in the box, that will be remodeled with proper ventilation and outside nest boxes. In a pinch, I can just add about 3/4 of an inch spacer under the roof and a latch to keep animals from being able to open it.

I have at LEAST 6 to house long term ...7 for a bit. I have 6 now, picking up a silkie tomorrow (I know...no resolve whatsoever), so I'll be at 7, then once I find a home for the lil roo, Pan, I'll be back at 6. That's a good idea for 1-2 though!

Is there something you care to share with us????

Nice coop, JeanPierre

Clovis, remember when you make the roost, use 2x2 or 2x4, don't use the round stick as this will hurt the chest bone; in some heavy breeds this can cause deformation during development age.
Oh no..my 5 weekers are on a round roost...should I take it out?

I got them from Mypetchicken.com and they said it was from an Ohio Hatchery but I don't know which one? I'm so worried ! I'm new to all this.
Meyer is in Ohio
