Hehe, Mama isn't a traditional lady! She loves to be given things she can use. She and I are kinda alike. For my birthday, I asked for 100 lbs of feed and for hers, she asked for me to get her a unique lawn ornament.

My sister ended up buying a ceramic pig in a can of beans. Get it?

I get it.

Just kinda checking in lol. Catching up on some reading. The weather has been real good the last day or so. It should continue for at least a while. Animals are doing good. My 10 (which turned into 12 :) ) chicks are doing awesome. Went back to the feed store that sells them, same batch so i got 2 more lol. They are growing good and developing their little feathers. Dang this weather is nice for a change! Getting garden plot ready to go as well.

I need a bigger one :/ But that's beautiful!

I have at LEAST 6 to house long term ...7 for a bit. I have 6 now, picking up a silkie tomorrow (I know...no resolve whatsoever), so I'll be at 7, then once I find a home for the lil roo, Pan, I'll be back at 6. That's a good idea for 1-2 though!

Oh no..my 5 weekers are on a round roost...should I take it out?
The coop I am building will hold 5, but you cold easily add to it to make it larger. That is my plan. I want it to hold 6-8. The city has a limit of 12 chickens I think. I'd love to get a silkie right now. They don't need much room.... I could worry about a big coop later. Dang! I need to get the tires paid off and recover from the roof first. grrrrr!!!!!

Here are some good ideas for building a coop. And plans for one. And another. And even more. :)

Aren't natural branches better for a roost? I know when I had parrots I always used natural perches for them because it is better for their feet.

Woot! I love this weather, too. As soon as I have time, I want to just pull up all the weeds in the garden and start tilling. Kinda wish I had help, though. Weeding a huge 50x30 foot plot with massive weeds is hard.

I might just soak the entire area with well water and start slashing my way through it. While the water soaks up, I'll be able to start germinating seeds!

Growing an organic, heirloom garden is sure to be difficult but it'll be worth it. I just wish more people around here would do it, too. It'd be nice to buy heirloom seeds locally. :)

Now, the big question....metal roof or shingled roof? I'd like to add gutters to collect the run-off into a rain barrel so I'm thinking metal but will it be too hot?

Metal lasts longer but sure will be hot. I have my coop Open Air so the wind can take away the heat. Also, shades on the coop is always the best solution.

I am not so sure it will be all that hot.  With a light roof, the sunlight will reflect back into the atmosphere and out into space.  I can't think of anything hotter than my nearly black shingle roof, which retains its heat after the sun goes down.
Tin reflects the sunlight..........:frow

We have cedar tree branches/small trees for roosts in a couple of our coops :yiipchick

Mine was a 50x20 (1000 sq ft) last year. I'll be toning it down a bit this year. I work construction and it's not bad in the spring and fall, but dang the summer heat gets to me. So i'll be doing just a 300 sq ft garden this year, give or take. You might be able to talk to a nursery. I know one here in my town sells certified organic.

We've been doing an organic garden & selling at our local farmers market for a couple of years now :)

Don't forget to buy your spouse some 2x4, some roofing materials, some nails, some chicken cloth ... then put some chocolate on top of these. Happy V-day
