Texas

hi everyone i'm new to BYC and to having chickens period. I was wondering if anyone had a silkie or silkie pullets that was around east tx like van, tx. everywhere I look its straight run i'm in need of a brooder but to no avail.... I would love your help thank you so much...

All I can do is welcome you to byc from Katy, tx. I know someone here will be along shortly to help you! It's a great place to be.

Those wing clips look painful.  I would hate to have to remove them.

I got my yard of dirt moved into the raised bed after work today.  It doesn't look like that much dirt until you start hauling loads of it up a hill.  I'm not sure how long it took -- 1.5 - 2 hours I guess. Glad it is done and out of the way.  My hands and back are sore now.

Cycling (I hope) and more yard work tomorrow.  I need to clean the garage out at some point here too.  It is a disaster area from the new roof going on...and my son.

Good for you!!

Hi All i have a problem and am in need if some advice. One of my hens is eating the eggs. She has been eating 1 to 2 a day for about a week now. I read about filling an egg with mustard as a way of discovering who the egg eater is, has anyone tried this? Do the other hens leave the mustard alone? Any help/ideas are welcome! Thanks
Chickens don't like mustard.

Here is the bed I put in. I'm going to get a crape myrtle for the other end of the bed and plant something ever green and taller growing in the middle. The Japanese holly ferns will grow to be 3' tall and are mostly ever green here. I will plant some medium bushes, in the middle (thinking some hydrangeas) and then in the front some small bushes (like dwarf yaupons). The blue rug junipers will fill in a lot of the bed and hide the cinder blocks. It's a work in progress, but coming along. I just can't believe no one has landscaped this yard before me.

Sasha 'helped' me all afternoon. :) She loves that ball.

What are the thoughts on this coop?
Enough ventilation do you think..or I guess you can't really tell from this picture..
We're finalizing our coop plans tonight so we can hopefully start the buying tomorrow and construction this weekend!
I'm having a hard time deciding but I love the clean lines on this one, and it seems easy enough

I'm thinking of adding a dutch door, so I can give treats and such without them rushing me.
And maybe a bigger run if we can swing it. This is only 4x12, which isn't enough for 7 (5 large, 2 bantams). Everything else is pretty great.
At least it seems like it to me, with my limited knowledge.

i really like the coop the only thing i see is if you put it in a place without all that shade it will need a solid top that doesnt let the light through. too much heat in tx for that. also i would have the end with the cleanout door facing west and a shadecloth or something over that end . it will be hot in there if you dont do that. just some thoughts on it very nice doesnt look hard to build at all. good luck :)

It's really coming along and it will beautiful when it's done!

They could mark the tops of their heads, that way you wouldn't have to fight with getting the clips off. We ordered Cinnamon Queens from Cackle and they marked the tops of their heads with a dye of some sort. Its probably how they marked them during sorting since we didn't request any markings. I think its an awesome idea to mark them, just not with something that might cause damage during removal.

Normally, you don't take them off. Lots of breeds have wing bands, especially feather footed breeds.

Just a quick note, before I get back to work in the yard. I went to Lowe's this morning and found hardware cloth is 75% off an already marked down price!!

I bought all they had left. 2'x10' rolls for $2.62 instead of $13-something. Score! My chicken coop has been started. Now to get that free wood from my neighbour.
What a great find! The wire is usually the most expensive part.

If you push up the little rounded tab on the end, it can be slid right out of the wing. I do them by myself, just hold the chick firmly in one hand and slide the tab up and maneuver it through the hole made in the wing. Several of mine came from Atwoods with the wingband and now you can't tell they even had them in their wing.
There was no way these things would "slid right out". The hair and skin and dried and stuck to the metal tabs. I had to use my fingernails to pry the skin loose from the tab. I put ointment on the wound since prying the skin loose caused all but one of them to bleed.

I'm in Fredericksburg (about an hour north of San Antonio)

I just got my babies, but hopefully someone can help you or point you in the right direction. Welcome to the Texas thread! I live near Longview.

It was such a nice day today. Hard to believe tomorrow is going to turn so bad. I did get some work done in my coop. I primed the back wall to get ready to put up the roost and build the in coop brooder.

It was 78 in the shop today. Too warm for my babies to get under the heat plate, so they did the next best thing. The decided to keep the heat plate warm for tomorrow when they will need it, lol

I hope ya'll don't mind me posting chick pics. I'm just so glad I finally got some!

Thank you. :) I can't wait for the bushes to fill it up and for my yard to be full of grass. I'm tired of the dirt.

Mind? Isn't posting chick pictures a requirement here? ;) They are so cute. I can't wait until I can get some little fuzz balls.
