Texas

I want to get these. I've seen them locally, I think. From what I've read, FF will work in any dish (except metal).

I want Black Copper Marans too. Welsummer, light sussex, Buckeye and an Ameraucana.... I'd love a cream legbar, but can't afford that right now. Future bird. :)

It doesn't make sense to just get the Australorp right now. Does it? I really only wanted one of each kind.

If I order from MPC they will come in July. Could they stay outside all the time in July and skip the brooder? It is so warm then I would think so. They would still need special care....

I should just take the day off work and go do my yard work. That will be a good change for me and maybe I can ride my bike later. If it isn't too windy. These spring winds are horrible! I need to be productive in a way I can see. Work just doesn't cut that for me. lol!
I have on of those long plastic feeders. I ended up taking the top off to put my ff in.

I don't think you are wanting a lot. Where would you put the little ones if they are outside? You need to make sure they can't escape through the fence (think hardwire on this). You don't want any varmints (raccoon, possums, etc.) putting their paws through and grabbing them.

I'm not fond of plastic. I prefer glass or stainless steel but I can't find chicken "stuff" made with stainless steel. All kinds of chemicals leach out of plastic especially if it is acidic. I try for food grade everything, but that isn't always possible.

I'm trying to find a glass hand juicer--you know, one piece of glass with the raised nobby thing to twist the citrus fruit on--for my chicks ff. I think I need to make a trip to the dreaded Walmart.
Jajeanpierre, you need to go to an antique store. I bought two juicers from there. Or I can mail one to you.

Good luck getting them chicks Lisa!!!

Be sure and post some pics!

GUESS WHAT????? I am SMILING! I bought 6 chicks. 3 Speckled Sussexs and 3 Americaunas. The feed store is getting Australorps in on the 19th, so I placed my order for 3. They are all females. I will try to get pictures out tonight. DH has the camera. :(

Lisa :)

I've thought about just using a ceramic dog dish. That is the plan for when they get older.

Do they still make those glass juicers? That is a great idea. I'm going shopping later and will look for one.

I ordered my Premier Heat Plate today! I have really committed (even more) to getting chicks now. It's back ordered until April..... That gives me time to get the supplies I need though. April isn't that far away.

Does anyone on here sell Black Copper Marans in my area? I guess I could just go with the MPC order. I really want to save that huge shipping cost though.

Ceramic has the same leaching problems that plastic does--it depends on where it is made. Some ceramic is not food safe. Lead poisoning comes to mind.

Yeah!!! Congrats on the chicks.

If I get my chicks in July I will have the coop done by then. All hardware cloth wire. I want to get them sooner though.

A dog's dish shouldn't leach anything. It would be food safe.

I ordered a couple from Amazon, thank you, Lisa.

Congratulations on your babies! Your Americanas won't likely be purebred Ameraucanas. Hatcheries aren't producing purebreds, but they usually produce a very good blue-egg layer so you won't be disappointed you bought Easter Eggers.

Hello from Austin. In the winter, rotate the coop so the wall blocks the north wind. For the summer, rotate the coop so the wall blocks the afternoon sun.

I think you need to revise your signature in your posting.

Really? I guess I will get a people one then.

I found glass juicers on Amazon. I didn't see them on Target's or Walmart's site. Thrift stores (in addition too antique stores) might be a good place to look too. Etsy.com has a ton of them.

Even people stuff can leach things. In general you never want to put anything acidic in ceramics. Glass or stainless steal. I bought a couple of those glass juicers from Amazon, thanks.

You aren't supposed to use metal dishes with FF though, or is stainless not what they mean?

I bought these on etsy (scroll down to see). I love the different looks they have. My mom has one that she has had forever and doesn't use. I asked her to bring it down with her the next time she visits. I want them to use for me and they will also come in handy for the chicks I am getting. That is a great idea Janet. :)

Check out the name of the shop on etsy. :)
