Texas

It has changed quite a bit. Is there any way you can help me get this thing off the ground?

Getting in touch with your local Veteran's Services Officer may help you with ideas/contacts etc. Can also look at contacting your local American Legion post and pitching your idea to them - they may have names of vets in need as well as contacts of people who might help.

Thanks! I'm ok. I'll miss him when I go out, but I won't lay awake at night listening to it rain and wondering if cupcake is sitting in the rain or in the coop. I made a good decision.
It must have been hard, but you DID do the right thing

Chickens are great therapy. Some people are not chicken people though, so don't get discouraged if not all seem enthused. I use chickens as therapy for PTSD. They are very calming.
I never thought I was a bird person, until these guys!
I'll be the first to agree that not everyone feels the same though. My mom think's I'm crazy lol.
But there are not many things better than coming home from work and watching some happy birds chase each other around for a grape!

Sounds silly but they're pretty great!

Tomorrow? It's Wednesday tomorrow? No this will be next week. 2-3 days old.
You have me thinking I'm losing my mind.....lol.
I'm...99% sure tomorrow is Wednesday. It better be! lol.

Great idea!! Thank you so much. I will check with them first thing in the morning.

I just got a text from an Iraq War vet. He wants me to build him a coop, but doesn't have much money. The coop he wants costs $500.00. I am doing it virtually at cost, and what he doesn't know is, I am throwing in 6 or 7 birds with the deal. The question I am asking is this, our "all knowing government is CUTTING the budget for the people who VOLUNTEER to go into harms way to protect us. These people have been shot at, mined, bombed, and who knows what else. I am trying to start a movement to supply these patriots a way to transition back to civilian life with very little stress. All of you know that raising chickens is very therapuetic. Some of these people come home with problems, that make it hard to return to civilian life. What do you say we help them. I am willing to give everything I have to help them. Let's start something in Texas, please give me your thoughts.

That's very noble of you. Kudos!

I don't have 'my' kids this week so I am all mixed up. I don't babysit them when then are on school holidays. Or sick. I get to have fun with them (they are 8 yr old, almost 9) and give them back to their parents. It's almost like being a grandma I guess, but more like a part time mom. They call me their second mom. :) I love those two.

I need a job that provides fun money. :) Now you don't have to practice the "I don't how that chick got here face".

I need to get ready for my new chick. I have a mental list of things to get. What am I forgetting? Food, brooder, light since heat plate is not hear yet. I have a covering for the bottom and dishes for food and water. I need to make a dust bath. I don't need grit if I get crumble starter, right? Oh, and a mirror to hang on the side so it will have a friend.

I think I am going to name it Prize as in SURPRISE!

IT's ok I feel "off" too, since my daughter is visiting my family for a week.
I'm practicing already. Hmmm...our anniversary is coming up....anniversary present? lol
I have a clamp light (you'll need a bulb) if you want it. It's warm enough and my chicks are old enough that I don't need it.
I don't know how you feel about "recycling" but I saved those cardboard mushroom cartons and used them for scraps, treats, dust baths, grit.....
We eat a decent amount of mushrooms in this house..lol
I almost grabbed you a big box at work today but then I remembered your cats lol

Oh!
I thought I'd share this...
My pup hasn't had the best behavior today, so I told him "no" on getting on the couch.
He crawled up VERY slowly, while i was watching him, and did this:

Not trying to brag guys..but how'd I get such a smart dog?!?!

Good afternoon Texas!!!

I have a question for y'all.

Do any of you get birds based on their heat tolerance? I am near Crockett in East Tx and it gets very hot. I am about 1/3rd finished with my coop/run. It is 10X25 and will be roofed with left over barn roofing. 1/2 inch hardware cloth all around. I also will be using heavy duty tarps on all sides except the southeast, so they will provide shade also. I will also be using electric poultry netting to allow the birds to range too!

Appreciate all the help!!!!

David
i'm not too far north of you same heat and humidity. i have rhode island reds and ameracuanas have had brown leghorns , barred rocks , black austrolops , buff orpingtons, silver laced wyndottes...ect and some others ... if you raise them here and keep plenty of shade and they have room (not too crowded) they will make it fine. heat will affect laying . i have found too that shade trees are cooler than a roof or shade cloth for them. the electric netting i have is 4' tall. so you might want to stick with the heavier breeds as the lighter ones can fly over that.
good luck with your birds. if you want ee's or reds give me a shout i am hatching some at least twice a month . :)
